  • Computational Mathematics
  • This program supports mathematical research in areas of science where computation plays a central and essential role, emphasizing design, analysis, and implementation of numerical methods and algorithms, and symbolic methods.  The prominence of computation with analysis of the computational approach in the research is a hallmark of the program.  Proposals ranging from single-investigator projects that develop and analyze innovative computational methods to interdisciplinary team projects that not only create and analyze new mathematical and computational techniques but also use/implement them to model, study, and solve important application problems are encouraged.

  • Smart and Connected Health
  • The purpose of the SCH Program is to develop next generation health care solutions and encourage existing and new research communities to focus on breakthrough ideas in a variety of areas of value to health, such as sensor technology, networking, information and machine learning technology, decision support systems, modeling of behavioral and cognitive processes, as well as system and process modeling. Effective solutions must satisfy a multitude of constraints arising from clinical/medical needs, social interactions, cognitive limitations, barriers to behavioral change, heterogeneity of data, semantic mismatch and limitations of current cyberphysical systems. Such solutions demand multidisciplinary teams ready to address technical, behavioral and clinical issues ranging from fundamental science to clinical practice.

  • The CISE Research Infrastructure (CRI) program drives discovery and learning in the computing disciplines by supporting the creation and enhancement of world-class computing research infrastructure. This infrastructure will enable CISE researchers to advance the frontiers of CISE research.   • CyberCorps (R): Scholarship for Service
  • The CyberCorps(R): Scholarship for Service (SFS) program seeks proposals that address cybersecurity education and workforce development. The Scholarship Track provides funding to award scholarships to students in cybersecurity. In return for their scholarships, recipients will work after graduation for a Federal, State, Local, or Tribal Government organization in a position related to cybersecurity for a period equal to the length of the scholarship. The Capacity Track seeks innovative proposals leading to an increase in the ability of the United States higher education enterprise to produce cybersecurity professionals.

  • Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDS&E)
  • The CDS&E program addresses the distinct intellectual and technological discipline lying at the intersection of applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, and the core science disciplines of astronomy, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and materials research.  Proposals are expected to be relevant to mathematical and physical sciences.  The CDS&E program welcomes proposals in any area of research supported through the participating divisions that:
      • Promote the creation, development, and application of the next generation of mathematical, computational and statistical theories and tools that are essential for addressing the challenges presented to the scientific and engineering communities by the ever-expanding role of computational modeling and simulation and the explosion and production of digital experimental and observational data.
      • Promote and encourage integrated research projects that create, develop and apply novel computational, mathematical and statistical methods, algorithms, software, data curation, analysis, visualization and mining tools to address major, heretofore intractable questions in core science and engineering disciplines, including large-scale simulations and analysis of large and heterogeneous collections of data.
      • Encourage adventurous ideas that generate new paradigms and that create and apply novel techniques, generating and utilizing digital data in innovative ways to complement or dramatically enhance traditional computational, experimental, observational, and theoretical tools for scientific discovery and application.
      • Encourage ideas at the interface between scientific frameworks, computing capability, measurements and physical systems that enable advances well beyond the expected natural progression of individual activities, including development of science-driven algorithms to address pivotal problems in science and engineering and efficient methods to access, mine, and utilize large data sets.

  • Fluid Dynamics
  • The Fluid Dynamics program supports fundamental research and education on mechanisms and phenomena governing fluid flow.  Proposed research should contribute to basic understanding; thus enabling the better design; predictability; efficiency; and control of systems that involve fluids.  Encouraged are proposals that address innovative uses of fluids in materials development; manufacturing; biotechnology; nanotechnology; clinical diagnostics and drug delivery; sensor development and integration; energy and the environment. Current research themes include: general fluid mechanics; flow of complex fluids; micro- nano- bio- fluid mechanics; turbulence and flow control; instrumentation and flow diagnostics.

  • The SES program supports research on strategic decision making, design, planning, and operation of commercial, nonprofit, and institutional service enterprises with the goal of improving their overall effectiveness and cost reduction.  The program has a particular focus on healthcare and other similar public service institutions, and emphasizes research topics leading to more effective systems modeling and analysis as a means to improved planning, resource allocation, and policy development.

  • Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Program
  • The Five Star/Urban Waters Restoration Program seeks to develop community capacity to sustain local natural resources for future generations by providing modest financial assistance to diverse local partnerships for wetland, forest, riparian and coastal habitat restoration, stormwater management, outreach and stewardship with a particular focus on water quality, watersheds and the habitats they support.

  • Media Projects
  • The Media Projects program supports the following formats: interactive digital media; film and television projects; and radio projects. The program makes awards in two categories:
    • Development Grants- enable media producers to collaborate with scholars to develop humanities content and to prepare programs for production. Grants should result in a script or a design document and should also yield a detailed plan for outreach and public engagement in collaboration with a partner organization or organizations.
    • Production Grants-  support the production and distribution of digital projects, films, television programs, radio programs, and related programs that promise to engage the public.

  • Broad Agency Announcement for Advanced Aircraft Compatibility Science and Technology Expansion
  • The goal of this Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) is to reach out and discover efforts, methods, algorithms and applications that may be beyond the horizon of the Air Force SEEK EAGLE Office (AFSEO). White papers should address unique and creative solutions to develop predictive capability of complex mechanical, aerodynamic, acoustical, and electrical phenomena, dynamics and interactions where little or no capability exists, and for advancing models, simulation and analysis in support of all aspects of aircraft-store compatibility beyond those that are currently in use. The program is seeking ideas that may be used to develop next generation algorithms, tools, techniques and methodologies, to be leveraged against the many aspects of aircraft compatibility evaluation.

American Heart Association (11/7/2013)

  • National and Affiliates Research Program
  •  The AHA supports a wide range of research and training awards in cardiovascular disease and stroke. National and its seven affiliates offer two funding cycles per year in winter. Not all programs are offered at each cycle. Awards include: Undergrad Student Research; Predoc and Postdoc Fellowships; Established Investigator Award; Scientist Development Grant; Beginning Grants-in-Aid; and Grants-in-Aid. the strategic focus for this cycle isPREVENTION. The AHA is interested in the science community exploring all aspects of prevention, which can assist the AHA in reaching its 2020 Goals and overall mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

  • The objectives of this program are to attract outstanding university faculty members and to support their research and to encourage their teaching and research careers. The program provides awards of $170,000 per year for three years. Awards are made to U.S. citizens who hold tenure track positions at U.S. universities and have held their Ph.D.s for five years or less to conduct research within the broad scope of ONR's interests.

  • Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience (CRCNS): Innovative Approaches to Science and Engineering Research on Brain Function
  • Through the CRCNS program, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF), the French National Research Agency (Agence Nationale de la Recherche, ANR), and the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) support collaborative activities that will advance the understanding of nervous system structure and function, mechanisms underlying nervous system disorders, and computational strategies used by the nervous system. Two classes of proposals will be considered: Research Proposals describing collaborative research projects, and Data Sharing Proposals to enable sharing of data and other resources.

  • A key strategic goal of DOT and the Federal Transportation Administration is to improve and maintain America’s public transportation systems to ensure they are safe and in a state of good repair in order to meet performance objectives. This program seeks proposals for projects that engage in the demonstration of innovative technologies, methods, practices and techniques in three areas: (1) operational safety, (2) infrastructure or equipment resiliency and (3) all-hazards emergency response and recovery methods.

U.S. Department of Energy (11/6/2013)

  • Reliable Electricity Based on Electrochemical Systems (REBELS)
  •  The Department of Energy anticipates that an FOA for the REBELS program will be issued within the upcoming months. The REBELS program seeks  to fund new intermediate temperature fuel cell (ITFC) technologies that efficiently generate stationary power from fossil fuels in the near-term, while simultaneously building a bridge to a zero carbon future. Currently, it is anticipated that there will be three specific areas of interest identified in the REBELS FOA as follows: (1) low-cost, efficient, reliable ITFCs for small distributed generation applications, (2) ITFCs that are capable of in-situ charge storage in an electrode to enable battery-like response to transients, and (3) electrochemical devices that produce liquid fuels from methane using excess renewable resources.
