National Science Foundation (12/14/11)

  • TN-SCORE Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
  • We are excited to offer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) with the Tennessee Solar Conversion using Outreach, Research and Education (TN-SCORE) EPSCoR National Science Foundation Grant. TN-SCORE is alternative energy research grant involving nine universities across Tennessee. The three research thrusts are:
    • Thrust 1 Advanced Solar Conversion and Innovation
    • Thrust 2 Components and Devices for Energy Storage and Conversion
    • Thrust 3 Nanostructures for Enhancing Energy Efficiency

    As part of the grant, there are competitive opportunities for undergraduates to work in research groups during the summer.

    The summer research experience is an 8-10 week program depending on the institution placed. Students will receive a $4000 stipend, housing, and supplies. Depending on the host institution, the stipend may differ and food may be included. In 2012, the host universities include Vanderbilt University, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee Tech, and University of Memphis. A travel stipend will be included for the TN-SCORE annual conference. Starting dates for the program are tentatively set for late May- early June but are determined by the availability of the dormitories and may vary by campus.     Student Application Requirements
    • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in college or university in Tennessee (4 year or community college)
    • Preference in applicant selection will be given to students who are underrepresented in STEM, to Tennessee residents and to those who have career and educational goals that involve alternative energy.
    Requirements of Participation

    In addition to performing the research on the project, all award beneficiaries are required to:

    • Present their research at the annual TN-SCORE Conference and Poster Day on the Hill.
    Application Details

    The absolute deadline is February 29, 2012, however applications will be reviewed as received with rolling awards decisions.

    • Application Form
    • Copy of Unofficial College Transcripts
    • A brief 1-2 page statement outlining how the summer research experience will strengthen and encourage the student’s pursuit of a graduate degree or career development that includes research components in STEM areas.
    • A letter of recommendation (2 page maximum) sent independently (email) by a faculty member at the student’s home institution. The letter should include:
      • In what capacity does the faculty member know the student
      • The student’s overall classroom performance
      • The student’s potential for graduate study and research
      • The student’s research experience
      • The level of undergraduate research in the student’s home department
      • The potential benefit to the student of involvement in the TN-SCORE undergraduate research program.
    Selection Process

    Applications will undergo careful review by a panel of TN-SCORE administrators and faculty researchers based on the following:

    • Scholarship: student grades, activities, and other performance indicators that suggest the student will have success in program
    • Research activity: relevance of proposed research to alternative energy issues and TN-SCORE program objectives
    • Faculty support: level of commitment from faculty member and consistency with their ongoing research activities

  • Young Faculty Awards (YFA)
  • This program solicits ground-breaking, single-investigator proposals from junior faculty for research and development in the areas of Physical Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine, Biology, Information and Social Sciences of interest to DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office, Microsystems Technology Office, and Information Innovation Office.

National Endowment of the Humanities (12/12/11)

  • Landmark Workshops for School Teachers
  • The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Education is accepting applications for Landmark Workshops for School Teachers. Awards range from $150,000 to $180,000 to support one-week, residence-based summer workshops for K-12 teachers.
  • The most important element is the specific humanities content of the project. The idea of place is also central, so proximity to a historical or culturally relevant site that will bring workshop participants in contact with significant primary sources is essential. Host institutions provide facilities conducive to scholarly research, discussion, and interaction. If an applicant’s home institution is not an appropriate place to host a workshop, it is possible to conduct the program at a nearby institution.

    Applications should address the significance of the subject and landmarks; the topics, questions, and readings that form the core of the intellectual conversation; and the qualifications of the humanities faculty who will lead the project. NEH encourages projects that investigate diverse traditions, represented by initiatives such as Bridging Cultures. “Such projects might explore the great variety of cultural influences on, and myriad subcultures within, American society. Projects might also investigate how Americans have approached and attempted to surmount seemingly unbridgeable cultural divides, or examine the ideals of civility and civic discourse that have informed this quest.”

U.S. Department of Energy (12/12/11)

  • Visiting Faculty Program (formerly known as FaST)
  • The VFP Program is a cooperative effort between the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant supports a team of one faculty member and two students (one can be a graduate student) for hands-on research opportunities in DOE national labs during the summer. Interested faculty members are encouraged to contact DOE laboratory scientists in advance to discuss research projects of mutual interest. Student participation is optional.

American Political Science Association (12/12/11)

  • Small Research Grant Program
  • The Small Research Grant Program supports APSA members to conduct research in all areas of political science. The intent of these grants is to support the research of political scientists who are not employed at Ph.D. granting institutions and to help further the careers of these scholars. Awards do not exceed $2,500. Many recipients use APSA support as seed money to obtain additional grant funding.

National Science Foundation (12/12/11)

  • Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM (TUES) Program
  • Formerly the Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement program, the TUES program supports projects to improve STEM education for all undergraduate students. Especially encouraged are projects that have potential to bring about widespread adoption of classroom practices that embody understanding of how students learn most effectively. Transferability and dissemination are critical. Although Type 1 proposals (generally smaller and more localized in scope) are due on 05/27, Type 2 and 3 proposals (larger and more national in scope) are due 1/13/12.
