Sculpture I class vehicles roll downhill
Dan Bethune recently challenged the students in his Sculpture I class to creatively find a way to move themselves down Vine Street from the UTC Fine Arts Center.
“They could come up with anything, as long as it got them down the hill,” Bethune said.
Some of their “vehicles” employed welding, wood, and found objects. Ashley Folkner described her “Iron Maiden” as “a play on the typical housewife, but not the way things really are.” Lisa Lange wanted to “do something fun” and her “Matchbox,” which looked like a matchbox and resembled a tiny Matchbox die-cast vehicle, was a play on words.
Bethune said the creation of the mixed media sculpture pieces incorporated everything the students had learned over the semester. “They learned the engineering of the project while they met the requirements,” Bethune said.
