Civil War prints donated to Lupton Library
A recent donation of 17 signed and numbered Civil War prints by popular Civil War artist Don Troiani has become a welcome addition to the Lupton Library.
Sally
Rosenberg of West Palm Beach, Florida, made the donation in loving memory of
her parents, Felix and Estelle M. Diamond, and her brother, David M. Diamond.
Rosenberg's father, Felix Diamond, was the founder of the Felix Diamond Company,
an insurance agency, and he was also a founding partner and charter board member
of WDEF-TV Channel 12 in Chattanooga. David Diamond had an affiliation with
local insurance companies.
Special Collections, where the newly donated Civil War prints will reside, has a new look at the Lupton Library, according to Steve Cox, Special Collections Librarian.
“These
are exciting times for the Special Collections, which includes the University
Archives, Manuscripts and Local History Collections, and Rare Book Collection,” said
Cox. “We have just completed
a renovation that included creation of a manuscripts room, rare book room,
and a reading room for researchers that includes a display area.”
Many of the primary source materials located in Special Collections provide excellent sources for scholarly research, as well as individual or class projects, Cox said. “Our rare books cover a time span of 14th century to the present day and include many valuable volumes and titles.”
The Dictionary of the English Language, by Samuel Johnson, London, 1755, was significant in that it lead to the standardization of spelling for the English language. It is a first edition book.
Memoirs of the War in the Southern Department of the United States was written by Henry Lee, with this later edition, from 1869, including a brief bio of Henry Lee written by his son, Robert E. Lee, owned by him and bearing his autograph inside.
