Interim provost, dean and department head named
Chancellor Roger Brown has announced that Dr. Herb Burhenn, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has agreed to serve the campus as Interim Provost. Burhenn will serve until July 1, 2006, or until a permanent provost has been appointed.
“Dr.
Burhenn enjoys the respect of both his campus colleagues and members of the
Chattanooga community,” said Brown.
Brown will name a committee to work with a search firm to conduct a national selection process for a permanent provost.
Burhenn came to UTC in 1970 as a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy and Religion. He became head of the department in 1979, and he was appointed dean in 2000. Burhenn replaces Dr. John Friedl, who stepped down from his position as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to return as a faculty member in the Department of Political Science, Public Administration, and Nonprofit Management.
Burhenn has announced two interim appointments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Charles Nelson, professor and head of biological and environmental
sciences, has been named acting dean of the college. Nelson joined
the UTC faculty in 1969 and has served as head of biology and
environmental science since 1982.
"Dr. Nelson has given this campus many years of dedicated service. He is committed to the academic strength of the institution and enjoys the respect of his faculty and staff colleagues," said Dr. Burhenn.
Dr. Tim Gaudin, professor of biological and environmental sciences, has
been named acting head of the department. Gaudin has been a UTC
faculty member since 1994.
"During his tenure at UTC, Dr. Gaudin has distinguished himself as a teacher and a researcher. His commitment to excellence is demonstrated in all of his endeavors, and he has shown himself to be a worthy and capable academic leader," said Dr. Burhenn.
