UTC joins the Holiday Starlight Parade, students hold holiday activities and WUTC provides special programming Christmas Day.
I love a parade
Scrappy, the UTC Cheerleaders and the Sugar Mocs delighted the crowd that braved cold, damp weather for the 2005 Holiday Starlight Parade. Coordinated by the Chattanooga Downtown Partnership, the parade was part of the Winter Days and Lights schedule.
Special thanks to Tony Stewart for driving the Mocs Train owned by Greg Underwood and to Paul and Sue Shepherd for driving the float carrying Scrappy, students from the Student Alumni Council and Admissions.

SGA presents Scrappy Claus, tree lighting
Students enjoyed Scrappy Claus and the Holiday Extravaganza recently in the University Center. The Student Government Association sponsored this fun filled event, with enough hot chocolate and ginger snaps for everyone, plus a present from Scrappy’s sack.
Chancellor Roger Brown added the finishing touch to the annual lighting of the holiday tree. SGA provided cider and goodies at the event.

Chancellor’s Holiday Open House spreads cheer
Faculty and staff enjoyed the Chancellor’s Holiday Open House where everyone enjoyed gobs of goodies. Chancellor Roger Brown and his wife, Dr. Carolyn Thompson hosted the festive event.

Tradition continues as WUTC-FM 88.1 provides a day of holiday programming on December 25th.
7a.m.- 10a.m. - SACRED CLASSICS
Sacred Classics debuts with a special program to ring in Christmas
morning: the joyous sound of holiday carols,motets and cantatas,both
ancient and modern. Beginning with two hours devoted to the caroling
tradition, Chanticleer,the Cambridge Singers, the choir of King’s
College, Cambridge, and Anonymous 4 will be featured. The sacred
story of Hanukkah, which begins on Christmas day, will be told in traditional
and contemporary music. Three extended works will conclude this program: Four
Christmas Motets by Francis Poulenc, Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata
and Bach’s Magnificat BWV 243.
10a.m. - 11a.m. - CHRISTMAS AROUND THE COUNTRY
Join host Fred Child for Performance Today’s annual tradition
of holiday concerts from coast-to-coast. Hear the Baltimore Consort from
NPR’s studio 4A; the Empire Brass from Florida; the a capella
singing group Canticle from Santa Barbara; and Chanticleer from Petaluma,
California. Additionally, enjoy a piano version of The Nutcracker from
St. Paul and a lavish Christmas Orchestral Overture from Champaign Urbana,
Illinois.
11a.m. - 12 noon -CHRISTMAS WITH THE PITTSBURGH
BRASS
The Pittsburgh Symphony Brass, led by Grammy Award winner George Vosburgh,was
organized in 1994 featuring some of the world’s finest orchestral brass
musicians playing in chamber ensemble. Hear the group in a holiday concert
featuring their unique blend of virtuosity with brilliant sonorities usually
associated with orchestral brass.
12 noon – 3p.m. - A CELTIC HARVEST CHRISTMAS
WUTC’s Celtic Harvest will expand an hour on Christmas Day. Join
Rabbit as she uncovers classic Christmas Celtic classics.
3p.m. - 4p.m. - JONATHAN WINTERS’ A CHRISTMAS
CAROL
Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Charles
Dickens’ holiday classic,using a special performing edition prepared
by Dickens for his own presentations. Mimi Kennedy also stars.
4p.m.- 5p.m. - HANUKKAH LIGHTS 2005
Four authors explore Hanukkah traditions in original stories. Hosted
by Murray Horwitz and NPR’s Susan Stanberg.
5p.m. - 6p.m. - SOLSTICE DREAMS: ENSEMBLE GALILEI & NEAL
CONAN
Evocative music of the season, performed by Ensemble Galilei,interspersed
with seasonal poems read by NPR’s Neal Conan. Ensemble Galilei
blends their music with texts from Ogden Nash,Li Young Lee, Mary Oliver
and Jim Harrison. Ensemble Galilei performs Irish, Scottish,Early
and Original music on a variety of ancient and modern instruments,including
the Celtic harp,Scottish small pipes,gamba,fiddle, recorders, whistles
and percussion.
6p.m. - 7p.m.- CHRISTMAS MEMORIES WITH MARIAN MCPARTLAND
Join Marian McPartland as she shares stories and impressions from her youth,recalling
the traditional English holiday melodies of “Good King Wenceslas” and “What
Child Is This,” while past Piano Jazz guests offer up newer, original, and
lesser known Christmas tunes including “I Want A Smile For Christmas.”
7p.m. – 8p.m. - CHRISTMAS FROM THE WORLD CAFE
NPR and WXPN team up for a very special “Roots Christmas”stage
show featuring new takes on holiday classics,as well as new contributions
to the holiday tradition. David Dye hosts this one-hour program of roots,blues,
Americana,and other contemporary music artists providing some old-fashioned
Christmas cheer – recorded on stage at the World Café LIVE In
Philadelphia. Guest artist include Raul Midon, Jonatha Brooke and
the Old Crow Medicine Show.
8p.m. –9p.m. - JAZZ PIANO CHRISTMAS 16
NPR is back onstage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with
established keyboard veterans mixing with promising newcomers offering original
and unique jazz interpretations of holiday favorites. Veteran jazz
writer and producer A.B. Spellman hosts the program along with New Orleans
jazz pianist Allen Toussaint, Marcia Ball, Hilton Ruiz and many
more.
9p.m.- 10p.m. - JAZZ PIANO CHRISTMAS 14
Recorded live in concert at the Kennedy Center,join keyboardists Patrice
Rushen, Lynne Arriale, Jason Moran, Arturo O’Farrill, 12-year
old sensation Matt Savage, chanteuse Karrin Allyson, vibraphonist
Stefon Harris, and the Bad Plus performing their own interpretations
of holiday standards. Hosted by NPR’s Lisa Simeone.
10p.m.- 11p.m. - CHRISTMAS W/ MOREHOUSE AND SPELMAN
GLEE CLUBS
The choirs of Morehouse College and Spelman College, two of the most
prestigious historically black institutions in the nation, join to present
a spectacular concert program. This joyous celebration of the schools’ tradition
of singing excellence showcases a trademark mixture of spirituals,carols
and sacred texts.
11p.m.- 12a.m. - A CHANTICLEER CHRISTMAS
From St. Vincent’s Church in Petaluma, California comes the inspiring
sounds of the season from one of the world’s finest choral ensembles…the
twelve men of Chanticleer, led by Joseph Jennings. This hour of
music ranges from renaissance music to spirituals.
