Experience the 2006 Annual Juried Student Exhibition
The UTC Department of Art 2006 Annual Juried Student Exhibition will be available for viewing at the Cress Gallery of Art through January 26. Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Jack Dingo Ryan, professional artist and Visiting Professor of Art and Art History, University of the South, Sewanee served as juror. Read Ryan's Comments.
“Overall I was attracted to UTC students’ intelligent fusion of content and formal concerns,” Ryan said. “Likewise it is great to see real creative vision that is the sign of a department that allows freedom within the context of an academic environment. I saw a lot of work by artists that will find homes soon in some very fine graduate programs across the country. The most difficult task was removing a lot of good work made by artists with real potential. The rest was easy because there was so much to appreciate.”
Ryan made 91 selections from approximately 145 submissions for this exhibition to highlight work created by students enrolled in the studio classes of the UTC Department of Art. Included in the exhibit are both two-dimensional and three dimensional works of art and design from all levels of the curriculum including the Foundation, Painting and Drawing, 3-D Studio, and Graphic Design Programs, as well as watercolor, printmaking and photography courses. Ryan also designated three overall show awards and 22 awards in nine categories of media and program level to be presented at the awards ceremony.
“The level of commitment demonstrated by these exhibiting students of our professional visual arts programs and the marvelous variety of the work selected makes this exhibition a popular venue for the Cress,” said Ruth Grover, Curator of Galleries and Collections. “Participating students also gain valuable practical experience associated with juried competitions.”
The Cress Gallery of Art is located in the Fine Arts Center at the corner of Vine and Palmetto on the UTC campus. Parking day passes are available at the Parking Services Office in the Facilities Building on Palmetto Street. After 5 p.m., Gallery visitors may park in any lot. The Gallery is open to the public and admission is free.
