UTC Language Laboratory Attendant
- Job Description
- The Student Language Lab Attendants are the front-line of service to students and faculty who visit the Language Laboratory. The Lab Attendant should be attentive to the needs of all Lab users and remind them that the Lab is an instructional facility, not a lounge. Each hour spent on the job in the Lab is paid, and Lab workers are expected to devote themselves to the work assigned until it is finished.

- Attend any training sessions and/or demonstrations offered by the Director.
- Be as flexible as possible when you work with the Director to establish your work schedule.
- Keep your assigned schedule diligently.
If you must be late, inform the Director; and if you must be absent, notify the Director and make arrangements for a substitute.
Be willing to fill in for other Lab Attendants in cases of real need.
- If you are the first to arrive, check out the key from the Department Secretary.
If you are on the last to leave, return the key to the Department Secretary.
- Respond to Lab user needs promptly and courteously.
- Instruct any Lab user who is not familiar with the machines on their proper use.
- Keep an accurate record of your hours, and turn it in on time to the Lab Assistant or the Director.
- Keep accurate records of students' attendance in the Lab.
- Keep the machines in working order to the limit of your abilities.
- Report any needed repairs to the Lab Assistant or the Director.
- Treat all equipment with care, especially the console.
Do not let the console cover slam when you close it.
- Duplicate any tapes assigned by the Director or Lab Assistant and any requested by students or faculty during your shift.
Do not leave the work for the next shift.
- Make sure no Lab user brings either food or drink into the Lab, and do not do so yourself.
- Do not engage in personal visitations or neglect your duties in the Lab during your shift.
- Familiarize yourself with the "Federal Work Study/Academic Service: Students' Rights and Responsibilities" publication which will be given to you by the Director.
- The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures views the Language Laboratory as an important part of the work of the Department, especially at the beginning and intermediate levels; and every member of the faculty values your work and contributions.
UTC Language Laboratory Director
- Job Description
- The Language Laboratory Director is the representative of the faculty in the Language Laboratory. The duties of the Director include the educational, technical and clerical facets of the Language Lab operation. The Director will be in the Lab at least 10 hours weekly.
- Duties

- Screen and hire Lab Attendants to be paid from the Work-Study Pool or the Departmental Part-Time budget to cover each hour the Lab is open with two Lab Attendants.
- Work with the Lab Attendants to determine a workable schedule of on-duty hours for each of them.
Sign and countersign the agreed-upon schedule to indicate agreement by both parties.
- Advise Lab Attendants of their duties.
- Train the Lab Attendants as necessary.
- Supervise the work of the Lab Attendants.
- Provide each Lab Attendant with phone numbers where you can be reached at all times that the Lab is open.
- Insure that there is always at least one -- preferably two -- workers on duty during each hour that the Lab is open.
- Supervise Lab Attendants in the duplication of tape programs as necessary.
- Accurately keep the time sheets for the Lab Attendants.
- Deliver the time sheets for the Lab Attendants to the Department Head for approval in a timely fashion.
- Make sure that the Lab equipment and other instructional machines are maintained in working order
- Request the Department Head's budgetary approval to arrange for needed repairs and other Language Laboratory expenses.
- Assist faculty in the preparation of supplementary Lab materials.
- Make the necessary arrangements to limit Lab access when members of the Foreign Language department faculty request use of the Lab for a class -- with ample lead-time, of course.
- Issue periodic reports on Lab usage to the faculty members who are teaching the 101-102 courses and any other courses which might require Lab attendance.
- Ensure the security of the Lab and its equipment and the materials stored there.
