Brock Scholars Fall 16 Freshman
Application Essay Topic

The application for the Fall 2016 Brock Scholars Freshman class will open on September 1.  As a part of that application you should submit an original piece of writing (750 words or so) on one of the following topics. This essay is the cornerstone of your honors application, and should demonstrate sharp, original thinking and showcase your writing at its best.

  1. Start with the Wikipedia article on “Poetry,” and then navigate to the article on “Physics,” using only the hyperlinks provided in the body of each successive article. In an essay, explain your overall strategy in getting from the first place to the last, and your tactics at each click. What interesting discoveries did you make along the way? Be sure to include an exact list of the links you followed. (Two other options: navigate from "Cello" to "Antarctica," or from "Pizza" to "Deep Time.")

  2. French novelist Anatole France wrote: "An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don't." So, what don't you know?
