Brock Scholars Curriculum

The Brock Scholars curriculum consists of specially designed and enhanced seminar courses, most of which fulfill general education course requirements.  The gen. ed. replacement nature of our curriculum allows students from any academic major to participate in the program.

The course prefix for these courses is UHON (University Honors).  Brock Scholars must take at least 31 hours of Brock seminars:

  • UHON 1010* - Humanities I (6 hrs.) and UHON 1020** - Humanities II (6hrs.); total 12 hrs.
  • Five other seminars (to total at least 15 hours) chosen from:
    • UHON 3510 - Topics in Historical Understanding
    • UHON 3520 - Topics in Literature
    • UHON 3530 - Topics in Thought, Values and Beliefs
    • UHON 3540 - Topics in Visual and Performing Arts
    • UHON 3550 - Topics in Behavioral and Social Sciences
    • UHON 3560 and 3565 - Topics in Natural Sciences and Lab
    • UHON 3570 - Topics in Mathematics
    • UHON 3580 - Topics in Statistics
    • UHON 3590 - Topics in Non-Western Culture
  • UHON 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 (1 hour each) – Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Honors Studies

*UHON 1010 is 6 hours of course credit, with 3 hours counting as General Education: Rhetoric & Writing and 3 hours counting as General Education: Literature. 

**UHON 1020 is 6 hours of course credit, with 3 hours counting as General Education: Rhetoric & Writing and 3 hours counting as General Education: Thought, Values, Beliefs.

The remaining 13–14 hours of General Education course work may be fulfilled through non-Brock classes (though students may fulfill more or all of their General Education requirements through UHON seminars if they wish).

Brock Scholars will also complete an honors thesis (4 hours) — either a Departmental Honors Thesis in the major (departmental course 4995) or an interdisciplinary thesis on the College level (UHON 4995).

Brock Seminars will be proposed annually by UTC faculty members and selected by the Honors College Advisory Committee for inclusion in the following year's class schedule. The seminars selected will then be developed carefully and collaboratively to ensure fulfillment of General Education learning outcomes.
