Personal Lines | Authorization Codes | Billing/Payments | Deactivation of Code | Long Distance Limit | Problems | 411

Telephone service has been installed in all the residence hall rooms and apartments on campus. Each phone may be reached directly from outside the University as well as within by merely dailing its assigned number.

There is no additional charge for the local service. However, long distance calls may be made only by those persons who have an official charge card number from the University, the telephone company, or other private telephone agencies. No calls may be charged to the telephone number that is listed on the telephone instrument, nor may collect calls be accepted under any condition.

Application for UTC charge accounts and access codes are available.

Personal Telephone Lines

Students have the opportunity to obtain their own phone line for their individuals rooms. There is a $80 a semester charge to do this. Please contact IT Support at 425-4000 to obtain the necessary forms.

Authorization Code Numbers

In order to access UTC long distance calling, resident students, must have an authorization code number. This number is similar to using a long distance calling card or telephone company calling card.

An authorization code number is free of charge. Using your authorization code number generates a long distance charge account with Telecommunications Services. You are mailed a monthly long distance bill. Resident students who prefer to use their personal calling card will generate no monthly bill. The only bill that is generated is via their personal calling card carrier. Students may also make collect calls by dialing 9+0+ the phone number.

HELPFUL HINTS YOU SHOULD KNOW AND REMEMBER

  • Do not loan your authorization code number to anyone. They may not reimburse you for their long distance charges, leaving you responsible for the charges, and they may loan the number to someone else.
  • You can only use your authorization code number to call long distance on resident hall telephones.
  • If you are visiting a friend in another resident hall room and you need to call long distance, you can still use your authorization code number.
  • Your account authorization code number should remain confidential! You are responsible for all long distance charges made on your account.
  • If you are placed on hold for non-payment, you will not be able to register for classes, or graduate until your account is paid in full. Once your account is paid in full, the hold status will be released.
  • If your payment is late and your authorization code number is deactivated at the time that you mail in your payment, you need to notify telephone services to reactivate your service.
  • No postage stamp is required for campus mailing. Be sure to use the "gray" campus mailboxes.
  • Optional private lines are also available for all rooms in University Housing. If interested students need to get in touch with Communication Services at (423) 425-4000 for rates.
  • To make calls on campus, students need only to dial the last four digits of the phone number. On campus calling does not require the full seven digits to place a call.

Billing/Payments

Telephone bills are mailed out on the first week of each month. Your bill will be mailed to the address that you specify on your authorization code application. (i.e., resident hall or permanent address.)

Please make your checks payable to UTC Communication Services. Also, it is very important that you include your social security number on the check. DO NOT MAIL CASH! Telephone bills are due in full by the 20th of each month. (i.e., the bill for long distance calls made during the month of January is billed February 1 and due in full by February 20th ) If payment of your bill is not made by the 20th your account is deactivated and then you will be placed on hold for non-payment.

Deactivation of your authorization code numbers

There are two ways your authorization code number may be turned off: non-payment and exceeding the long distance charge limit.

Long Distance Calling Limit

There is a $100 allowed for long distance. If your balance exceeds the $100 limit before your bill is due on the 20th, your authorization code will be deactivated. To have your service restored you can pay the balance of your bill in order to get the balance below $100 limit.

Problems with Calling

If you experience problems with calling (such as cut-offs, bad connections, static, unable to hear, disconnections) within the United States and international calls, please report the problem as soon as possible.

It is very important that you call our office and report any trouble that you may be having. That way the technicians can run text immediately to track the trouble. Once the text are completed and the trouble call is verified, we can then credit your long distance account.

If you experience a bad connection calling long distance after 5pm, place a touble ticket. Please include your name, UTCID, dormitory address, telephone number, long distant telephone number called, city code, country code, time the call took place, and a description of the problem.
