A First Year Experience Peer Mentor is a leader inside and outside the classroom.  You are independent and friendly, trustworthy and organized.  You have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75, and will be a Sophomore (30+ earned hours) by the Fall 2016 semester.  You want to gain professionally relevant leadership experience, expand your personal and professional network, and have a significant impact in the life of first-year students in transition.

Requirements to be a FYE Peer Mentor:

  • Maintain good academic standing with a minimum cumulative 2.75 GPA
  • Must have sophomore status (30+ earned hours) by Fall 2016
  • Be actively involved on campus both inside & outside the classroom (recommended)

Qualities of a FYE Peer Mentor:

  • Must be able to work independently
  • Have strong interpersonal skills
  • Friendly and personable
  • Be comfortable leading group discussions & working closely with your faculty mentor
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
  • Strong and effective organizational and time management skills
  • Be trustworthy

Primary Job Responsibilities of a FYE Peer Mentor:

  • Devote an average of 10 hours per week
  • Make weekly contact with each member of your mentor group
  • Assist your mentees with adjustment & transitional issues
  • Direct your mentees to individuals, organizations, & programs at UTC related to their interests & needs
  • Assist students in evaluation & assessment of those interests & needs
  • Attend all class sessions of your assigned First Year Experience course section
  • Meet weekly with your FYE faculty mentor
  • Participate in bi-weekly roundtable discussions with other FYE Peer Mentors
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
