From its grassroots origins as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe, Ballet Hispanico has grown into a world class institution. Now under the artistic direction of Eduardo Vilaro, the Company performs a diverse repertory by the foremost choreographers of our time as well as emerging artists. The works fuse Latin dance with classical and contemporary techniques to create a new style of concert dance in which theatricality and passion propel every move. The choreographers represent a multitude of nationalities including Venezuela, Cuba, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia. The Company has offered over 3,350 performances to audiences of over two million throughout 11 countries.
Ballet Hispanico will introduce several new pieces to its repertory during the 2013-14 season. Dynamic Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto has been commissioned to choreograph his first work on Ballet Hispanico, entitled Sortijas, which celebrates the Latino experience in its full cultural and social complexity. Archipiélago, choreographed by Vilaro, is an exploration of distance, time, and the unavoidable separation caused by geographical politics. Additional choreographers commissioned to create works include Sergio Trujillo and Julio Zurita, Inma García and Meritxell Barberá, and former New York City Ballet Soloist Edwaard Liang. Rounding off the 2013-14 repertory to go on tour will be Danzón, choreographed by Vilaro, Tango Vitrola, choreographed by Alejandro Cervera, Jardi Tancat, choreographed by Nacho Duato, Club Havana, choreographed by Pedro Ruiz, and Nube Blanco, choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa.
