Dr. Matthew J. Smith is in his first year as Assistant Director of Bands and Director of the Wind Ensemble at UTC.  Smith joins UTC after serving as Assistant Director of Bands at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont.  At Castleton he directed the Wind Ensembles, Marching Band, Spirit Band, and Musical Pit Orchestra.  Smith completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Connecticut.  While at the University of Connecticut, Smith premiered the Big East Band Directors Association Consortium Project: Torn Canvases by Matthew Tommassini. 

Smith received his Masters in Conducting from West Virginia University.  During his time at West Virginia he was the Graduate Assistant to the Concert and Athletic Band Programs.Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Dayton.  During his time at Dayton served as Director of the Women's Basketball Pep Band, Field Commander of the Pride of Dayton Marching Band and served as an Assistant Conductor with the New Horizons Concert and Jazz Ensembles. Following his undergraduate work he was the Director of Bands at Charlotte Catholic High School (Charlotte, North Carolina). In 2005, Smith presented a clinic at the Ohio Music Educators Association Conference: "First Year Teachers and the Real World; What They Do Not Teach You in College."

Smith recently completed his 2nd season with the Hartford Opera Theater's "New in November" where new ten minute operas are staged, rehearsed and performed all in the span of 48 hours.  Smith has taken his ensembles to perform nationally and internationally to such places as The Riverside Church in New York City and St. Peter's Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. He is a member of Phi Mu Alpha, an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma, The Music Educators Associations of: Connecticut, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Vermont and West Virginia; as well as NAfME - The National Association for Music Education.
