Applying systems analysis and initiatives to understand and improve emergency room procedures to increase ER productivity.

        Undergraduate research for solids modeling and design testing for specialized products.

National Science Foundation (Oct 2007 – Sept 2011) – Grant $531,257

Principal Investigator: Scholars Program—4 year project to provide scholarships to 35 academically talented, students based on financial need. Scholarships target freshman students from underrepresented populations and those completing the high school pre-engineering curriculum of Project Lead the Way (PLTW). Students will live in a Living/Learning environment and comparisons of outcomes between PLTW students and nonPLTW students will be made. Co-Principle Investigators:  Dr. Ed McMahon, Dr. Ignatius Fomunung.

Principle Investigator: Technology Designed to Benefit ProjectTeam with Tennessee’s Early Intervention System (TEIS) and Signal Centers’ Assistive Technology (AT) Center to have teams of engineering students develop or  improve existing adaptive and assistive technology to benefit the lives of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children with disabilities.

Principle Investigator: CSEMS Bridge Project—2 year project to provide scholarships to 40 academically talented, low-income students making the transition from a 2-year institution to UTC’s Engineering, Computer Science, and Math programs.

National Science Foundation (Fall 2001) - Grant $162,250

Principal Investigator: Scholars Program—2 year project to provide scholarships to 36 academically talented, low-income students: 20 making the transition from a 2-year institution to UTC’s Engineering and Computer Science Programs, 10 present CSES juniors, and 6 present CSES graduate students.

Co-Principle Investigator: “Adventures in Computers, Engineering and Space" (ACES)—a summer and academic year program that encourages 7th and 8th grade girls to consider careers in computers, engineering and space, as well as to continue their education in science and mathematics.
