CAREER POSSIBILITIES

A wide variety of career options are available to chemical engineering students after graduation. Career opportunities for chemical engineers are available in petroleum refining, petrochemical manufacturing, specialty chemicals manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, fiber and plastics manufacturing, and food processing. Recent UTC graduates have found employment with such nationally known companies as Shell Oil, DuPont, AMOCO, Sofix, Martin-Marietta (Oak Ridge), Westinghouse (Savannah River), Tennessee-Eastman, Millican and TVA. UTC graduates are performing duties in chemical plant design and operation, chemical product development, chemical process research, and chemical plant management.

The UTC chemical engineering specialization also prepares the student for graduate study in engineering and for professional medical training. UTC graduates have earned Ph.D. and MD Degrees from such universities as Vanderbilt, Miami and North Carolina State.

UTC has an active cooperative education program. Co-op allows a student to attend college and gain practical engineering experience on either a concurrent or alternating semester schedule. Often, a co-op position will lead to an offer of full-time employment with the co-op employer after graduation.

The expected starting salary range for ChE graduates is from $40,000 to $50,000 depending upon academic performance, co-op or other work experience and the geographical area of the job site.

EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION

Educational preparation for a career in engineering begins with a high school emphasis in science and mathematics. Chemistry, Physics and four years of Mathematics and English provide the best foundation for engineering study. With an appropriate high school preparation, the UTC student can earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) degree with specialization in chemical engineering in four years of study. Participation in co-op will add one year to the program of study. The UTC engineering program leading to the B.S.E. degree is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the national board which accredits qualified engineering programs.
