- Susan Eastman teaches Rhetoric and Composition and General Education literature courses including Introduction to Literature and Values in 20th Century American Literature. She holds a PhD in American Literature from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her teaching, writing, and research interests emphasize contemporary cultural memory in war literature, films, and memorials, particularly those of the American War in Viet Nam and the “War on Terror.”
Research and Creative Interests: Memory, war literature, films and memorials, and graphic novels.
Teaching Interests: Contemporary American and ethnic literature, cultural studies, war literature, films, and memorials, and graphic novels.
Teaching Approach: Students in my courses are not passive recipients of knowledge, but active and valued cocreators of the learning experience. For example, students participate in community decision making when I ask them to cooperatively create course policies and to choose some of the reading selections. I also emphasize cultural studies by including photography, painting, memorials, film, comic books, and graphic novels in literature courses.
