Dr. Bruce Hutchinson received the Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1979. Prior to that he served for five-plus years as a Naval Officer on conventional submarines and as an intelligence officer in Vietnam flying “back-seat” in over 100 missions. He is active in community and professional groups. He consults regularly throughout the Southeast as an expert economist in legal lost-earnings cases; is a regular commentator on the talk-radio show, "Let's Talk Money;" is on the Orange Grove Center, Inc. Board of Directors where he has been President, Chairman and Assistant Secretary; and, for more than a decade has been Co-coordinator of "The Decosimo Lecture Series on Global Business."

His recent publications include: “A Gender Comparison of Economists’ Publication Records” (Journal of Economic Educators, Vol. 10, No. 2 [2010]), “Confounding Issues in the Deadweight Loss of Gift-Giving” (Journal of Economic Educators, Vol. 8, No. 4 [2008]), and “Is Contracting-Out Government Services the Great Panacea: Evidence from Public School Transportation in Louisiana?” (The Journal of Private Enterprise, Vol. 23, No. 1[2007]). His article co-authored with Dr. J.R. Clark “The Laffer Curve for Amnesty” (The Journal of Private Enterprise, Vol. 20, No. 1 [2004]) was selected as “best paper of the year.” In addition to teaching Macro- and Microeconomic Principles, he regularly teaches upper-level courses in Intermediate Microeconomic Theory, International Economics, Sports Economics, and Urban Economics.
