Computer Engineering integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science to develop computer systems for a variety of applications. Computer engineers usually have training in electrical engineering, software design, and hardware-software integration instead of only software engineering or electrical engineering. Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual microprocessors and computers (individual and super) to circuit design and computer interfaces. This field of engineering not only focuses on how computer systems themselves work, but also on how they integrate into the larger project or system.
Environmental Engineering is the application of science and engineering principles to improve the natural environment (air, water, and/or land resources), to provide healthy water, air, and land for habitation, and to remediate polluted sites. It involves waste water management and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, environmental sustainability, and public health issues as well as a knowledge of environmental engineering law. It also includes studies on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.
Industrial Engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.
The interdisciplinary concentration of the BSE program is an innovative curriculum that provides students the flexibility to integrate the core courses for the BSE degree with electives of their choice to broaden their education for their professional and personal goals. Students in the program will customize their education using electives across the engineering disciplines and other courses in and outside of the College of Engineering and Computer Science with a full-time faculty advisor. The students are required to complete a formal program of study with the advisor to ensure inclusion in the curriculum program multiple engineering disciplines and a complementing elective emphasis. This program allows students to tailor an engineering curriculum with elective courses to expand their education beyond a single engineering area of study.
Nuclear Engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the application of the breakdown (fission) as well as the fusion of atomic nuclei and/or the application of other sub-atomic physics, based on the principles of nuclear physics. In the sub-field of nuclear fission, it particularly includes the interaction and maintenance of systems and components like nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants, and/or nuclear weapons. The field also includes the study of medical and other applications of (generally ionizing) radiation, nuclear safety, heat/thermodynamics transport, nuclear fuel and/or other related technology (e.g., radioactive waste disposal), and the problems of nuclear proliferation.
The UT Chattanooga STEM Education Engineering program provides students the opportunity to (1) obtain a B.S.E degree that emphasizes the general focus of engineering across disciplines or within a discipline and (2) obtain eligibility for teacher licensure (for teaching Mathematics or Physics) in Tennessee and in those states that grant reciprocity privileges to graduates of institutions accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
