Women's Studies Spring 2013 Speaker's Series: “Witches,” “Radicals,” and the Rhetoric of the Equal Rights Amendment
Posted by: Dr. Talia Welsh
Details:
Dr. Rebecca Jones of the Department of English will speak about “Witches,” “Radicals,” and the Rhetoric of the Equal Rights Amendment. This presentation will briefly trace the history of the Equal Rights Amendment from its introduction by Alice Paul through its near ratification and, finally, to its demise, thanks to the efforts of Phyllis Schlafly’s STOP (Stop Taking Our Privileges) campaign. While the language of the amendment is quite simple, the debate surrounding it offers a complex set of arguments about the definition of family, the definition of woman, and, even, the definition of happiness all couched in rhetorics of public policy and law. The presentation narrows in on the ERA debates between Betty Friedan (The Feminine Mystique) and Phyllis Schlafly (The Power of the Positive Woman). These debates offer a compelling example of the ways argument strategies are related to public belief. We will listen to some of the 1973 debate and watch clips from the era as a way to discuss the battle between the “witches” and “radicals.” Finally, we’ll discuss how the women’s liberation movement lost the legal battle but continued a sweeping campaign to change America’s beliefs about women.
