TALK: The Economic Costs of Xenophobia: A Case Study of Johannesburg, South Africa
Calendar: cal1
Posted by: Michaël Bonnal
Details:
SPEAKER: Bethany Moore, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

WHEN: Tuesday April 19th at 3:30 PM

WHERE: University Center (UC) Auditorium

Abstract:

As labor markets have become more globalized, concerns about international human migration have risen to the forefront of public discourse. Xenophobic discrimination is a social and economic issue which may generate labor market inefficiencies that negatively affect individual workers and employers alike. This type of discrimination has been extensively studied in South Africa by political scientists and sociologists. The current study builds upon this research within the discipline of economics. In particular, it uses extensive survey data provided by Dr. Loren Landau, director of the African Centre for Migration and Society at the University of the Witwatersrand to estimate migrant wages in Johannesburg, South Africa. Differences among migrants from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Mozambique, and Somalia are also examined. The results suggest that migrants from the DRC experience the most discrimination in the labor market while Mozambicans experience the least.

This event is sponsored by the UTC Department of Economics and UTC Economics Club.
