Women's Studies Spring 2013 Speaker's Series: “Witches,” “Radicals,” and the Rhetoric of the Equal Rights Amendment
Details:
Dr. Rebecca Jones of the Department of English will speak about “Witches,” “Radicals,” and the Rhetoric of the Equal Rights Amendment. This presentation will briefly trace the history of the Equal Rights Amendment from its introduction by Alice Paul through its near ratification and, finally, to its demise, thanks to the efforts of Phyllis Schlafly’s STOP (Stop Taking Our Privileges) campaign. While the language of the amendment is quite simple, the debate surrounding it offers a complex set of arguments about the definition of family, the definition of woman, and, even, the definition of happiness all couched in rhetorics of public policy and law. The presentation narrows in on the ERA debates between Betty Friedan (The Feminine Mystique) and Phyllis Schlafly (The Power of the Positive Woman). These debates offer a compelling example of the ways argument strategies are related to public belief. We will listen to some of the 1973 debate and watch clips from the era as a way to discuss the battle between the “witches” and “radicals.” Finally, we’ll discuss how the women’s liberation movement lost the legal battle but continued a sweeping campaign to change America’s beliefs about women. Location: UC Lookout Mountain Room Refreshments will be available starting at 5:00pm. |

Ghosts and the Buddhist Imagination in Early Medieval China
Details:
Robert Campany Vanderbilt Universtiy University Center, Raccoon Mountain Room The Buddhism familiar to many Americans and Europeans today has aptly been termed “a modern hybrid tradition with roots in the European Enlightenment no less than the Buddha’s enlightenment” (D. McMahan, The Making of Buddhist Modernism). In this talk, Dr. Campany will discuss miracle tales emanating from a much earlier and very different sort of Buddhism as it was lived and practiced in early medieval China. The tales he will present feature visitations by ghosts to living persons. Medieval Chinese readers and hearers took these stories to be documentation of the workings of the normally unseen spirit-world. Through the tales we can glimpse an imaginal world that, although central to many people in China around 490 C.E., is now often ignored. The talk will focus on the roles and functions of ghosts in these narratives. |

You’re On the Air: How to Really Make it in Voice-Overs
Details:
Voice-overs are hot today! You don’t have to be an actor to get voice-over work, but it certainly doesn’t hurt! With such notable talent as Morgan Freeman, Glenn Close, and Alec Baldwin lending their voices to commercials, films, and videos, one would think that it would be next to impossible to break into this field. Not so! You’ll learn about an exciting, new way to get around the competition and actually turn voice-overs into a thriving full or part-time business! The instructor will discuss the voice-over business as a whole, the numerous opportunities, the incredible income potential, and the all important “demo” and how to have it produced. You’ll step up to the mic and do some practice recording, and best of all, you’ll hear the results! This is a one-time class meeting. Choose between the spring session in April and the summer session in June. $50 Session 1: Course #: 5150 When: Tuesday, April 9, 2013 Time: 7:00-9:00 p.m. UTC: Holt 207 |

$50 Session 2: Course #: 5203 When: Wednesday, June 26, 2013 Time: 7:00-9:00 p.m. Location: TBA |
