Ladysmith Black Mambazo at UTC Fine Arts Center
Details:
One of this season’s highlights, the world-renowned Ladysmith Black Mambazo comes to UTC for the first time for a stellar concert as part of the Patten Performances. For more than forty years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has married the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. The result is a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape. A radio broadcast in 1970 opened the door to their first record contract – the beginning of an ambitious discography that includes more than forty recordings, three Grammy Awards and fifteen nominations. In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated Black Mambazo’s rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into Graceland – the landmark 1986 recording that won the Grammy Award for Best Album and is considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. Tickets are available at www.tickettracks.com or by calling the UTC Fine Arts Center Box Office at 423.425.4269. |

Diavolo Performs at UTC Fine Arts Center
Details:
Continuing its presentation of America’s top dance companies, the Patten Performances bring the uniquely theatrical Diavolo to Chattanooga for the first time ever this season. Diavolo was founded in 1992 in Los Angeles by Jacques Heim to create large-scale interdisciplinary performances which examine the funny and frightening ways individuals act with their environment. Constantly changing the image presented to the audience, Diavolo has developed a movement vocabulary that creates an almost cinematic experience of powerful images that develop abstract narratives of the human condition and is at the same time crafty and witty. The company’s outrageous and surrealistic sets form an intrinsic part of each piece of work. Everyday items such as doors, chairs and stairways provide the back-drop for dramatic movement – leaping, flying, twirling – that creates metaphors for the challenge of relationships, the absurdities of life and the struggle to maintain our humanity in an increasingly technological world. Tickets to this incredible show are available at www.tickettracks.com or by calling the UTC Fine Arts Center Box Office at 423.425.4269. |

Comedy of Errors presented at UTC Fine Arts Center
Details:
For the first time ever in the history of the Patten Performances, Shakespeare’s "Comedy of Errors" comes to life in the UTC Fine Arts Center as only the Acting Company and Guthrie Theatre can create it. Founded in 1972 by the legendary John Houseman and current Producing Artistic Director Margot Harley, along with the first graduating class of The Juilliard School's Drama Division, The Acting Company continues to develop classically trained American actors and a national audience for the theater. Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone, Rainn Wilson, Jeffrey Wright, Frances Conroy, Harriet Harris, Jesse L. Martin, David Schramm, Henry Stram, Tom Hewitt, David Ogden Stiers and Hamish Linklater are just a few of the hundreds of actors whose careers began on tour with The Acting Company, which has performed 131 productions for millions of people in the United States, London, Australia, Russia and Eastern Europe. Over the years, The Acting Company has won numerous Obie, Audelco, Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards and a TONY. Patten Performances Present: The Secret Sisters
Details:
The Secret Sisters’ incredible story is as simple and true as the effortless harmonies that have garnered them all the attention from the Hunger Games soundtrack and are bringing them to the UTC Fine Arts Center to open the Patten season this year. It was the sisters’ - Laura and Lydia Rogers - vocals and their love and respect for music and harmony that first caught the attention of T Bone Burnett, who signed on as Executive Producer. As Burnett explains, “I’ve been making music for over forty years and The Secret Sisters are as close to pure as it gets. Listening to them sing, you hear a sound that is timeless and of the moment. You hear the history of rural American music from the 1920’s and a reverence for every musical genre this country has produced.” Join us for this evening of some of the finest talent we’ve ever featured! Patten Performances Present: Second City For President!
Details:
Do you have electoral fatigue? Do polling numbers and spin doctors already have you reeling? Then the Second City at the UTC Fine Arts Center is the perfect remedy! Second City for President: a gut-busting comedy revue that doles out laughter at the expense of both sides of the aisle as well as comedy that is decidedly un-political, un-censored and un-abashedly hilarious. Second City for President runs on a strictly pro-comedy platform. Join the gang as they return to Chattanooga just in time to keep us from going crazy with the season’s politics. You know them as the company that brought improv-based sketch comedy to the world and introduced John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner, among many other creative geniuses, to worldwide audiences through NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Put your cares aside and come to the UTC Fine Arts Center to see the next generation of comedy take on politics and politicians! Location: Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Center |

Patten Performances Present: Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance
Details:
Continuing its rich tradition of bringing the most important dance companies to Chattanooga, the Patten Performances present the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company as part of our 33rd season. This company needs little introduction; its importance springs from the 11-year collaboration between Jones and Zane (1948-1988) that redefined the duet form and foreshadowed issues of identity, form and social commentary that would change the face of American dance. The Company emerged onto the international scene in 1983 with the world premiere of Intuitive Momentum, featuring legendary drummer Max Roach, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Since then, the Company has performed in over 200 cities in 30 countries on every major continent. It is recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the modern dance world.
