Details:

Their self- understanding will be compared with the community that is described in Acts 2-4. Both of these religious associations understood themselves as living in extraordinary times and both shared practices such as pooling their possessions. Both their shared characteristics and the distinctions between them will be explored. |

Details:
We the Kings Live @ the UC Gameroom - One show Only! We the Kings will be doing a live acoustic show for free @ UTC! 4:30 in the UC Gameroom - they will be giving away tickets to their show in Nashville & playing Nintendo Wii! We the Kings are an unapologetically commercial pop-punk band from Bradenton, FL, a small town on the west coast of the state notable primarily for being the home of Tropicana orange juice. Friends since childhood (the band name refers to the name of their junior high mascot), the foursome -- singer and guitarist Travis Clark, guitarist Hunter Thomsen, his bassist brother Drew Thomsen, and drummer Danny Duncan -- formed the band while still attending high school. In 2007, under the guidance of manager Bret Disend, the still-teenage quartet placed a number of tracks on the social-networking site Purevolume to build their online buzz as an unsigned band while pursuing a deal with EMI's revived faux-indie imprint S-Curve Records (Joss Stone, Fountains of Wayne, the Baha Men). Their self-titled debut album was produced by Sam Hollander and mixed by Lou Giordano, who had each done the same for then-current chart favorites Gym Class Heroes and the Plain White T's, respectively.-AMG. |

Live @ 7 pm in the UC Auditorium "Built on the backs of three accomplished jazz kids who handle piano keys, drum sticks and bass strings like extensions of their own limbs, The Beast offers a dazzling springboard of beats, textures and solos for Pierce Freelon's positive but pragmatic verse." -The Independent Equally comfortable in the worlds of hip-hop and jazz, The Beast developed its distinct sound on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. While pianist Eric Hirsh, drummer Stephen Coffman, and bassist Pete Kimosh were earning their music degrees, emcee Pierce Freelon (son of 6-time Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon) was developing the foundation for his intelligent lyricism in the Department of African American Studies. After graduating, the quartet joined forces in 2007 and quickly distinguished themselves as a pioneering force in the North Carolina music scene through their high energy live show and exceptional compositions. "one of the hottest acts on the independent music scene" - Durham Magazine The Beast’s critically acclaimed debut EP, Belly (available on iTunes) was hailed as "eclectic and intricate Hip-Hop shot through with soul and Afro-Cuban influences”. The follow-up EP, Catalyst, is a free digital download that showcases The Beast in a live performance setting (download at: thebeastmusic.com/catalyst). Their highly praised full-length debut, Silence Fiction captures a powerful synergy, with nine songs that build a bridge between hip-hop heads and jazz/soul connoisseurs. "Silence Fiction captures the beauty of real hip-hop: positive, up-beat lyrics and fantastic instrumentation." - The Matrix Project |

Patten Performances Present Red Priest
Details:
Red Priest is the only early music group in the world to have been compared in the press to the Rolling Stones, Jackson Pollock, the Marx Brothers, and Cirque du Soleil. This extraordinary acoustic foursome has been described by music critics as ‘visionary and heretical’, ‘outrageous yet compulsive’, ‘wholly irreverent and highly enlightened’, and possessing a ‘red-hot wicked sense of humour.’ Founded in 1997, and named after the flame-haired priest, Antonio Vivaldi, Red Priest has given several hundred sell-out concerts and performed at many of the world’s most prestigious festivals. They have redefined the art of period performance, creating a virtual orchestra through their creative arrangements, performing from memory with swashbuckling virtuosity, heart-on-sleeve emotion and compelling stagecraft. Adults, $22; Faculty/Staff, $16: UTC Students, $10. Tickets available online at www.tickettracks.com or at the FAC Box Office (423.425.4269). Spring Fest & Take Back the Night: Natalie Stovall & Nathan Angelo
Details:
Spring Fest - all your favorite carnival rides & novelties.. Oak St & Cardiac Hill from 11 - 3 pm. 7 pm - Nathan Angelo & Natalie Stovall LIVE in the UC! Concert in part of Take Back the Night Take Back the Night - University Center @ 7 pm Thirty-three years ago, women started to stand up and speak out against sexual violence under the banner of Take Back the Night. During those years, Take Back the Night became known internationally as a visible way to take a stand against sexual violence, specifically violence against women. Women from New York to India are letting their voices shatter the silence, but there is much to be accomplished in the fight to end sexual violence. Crimes of this nature continue to appear in the news in epidemic proportions. Our movies, our music, and daily news describe another killing, shooting; more abuse, violence and rape. As the history of Take Back the Night continues to be written, its mission to end sexual violence for all remains a beacon of hope for the millions affected by crimes of violence. We have made great strides, but our march is far from over. |

A Midsummer Night's Dream
Details:
Several students from UTC have banded together to produce, direct, design and perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. Four UTC theatre students have come together to set up this performance of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. The story begins with two lovers who are torn apart by parents and laws in Greece. They decide to steal away to be married in secret. On their way they are faced with stalkers, geeks and fairies. This updated version gives the audience Shakespeare’s version of today’s modern romantic comedy. Lysander is now the most popular guy in Athens. Hermia is the most popular girl. Shakespeare’s most beloved clowns, the Mechanicals, are all nerds. This updated version brings the themes of love overcoming all odds to the forefront. Production dates are June 19th and 26th at 11am and 4pm, and June 20th and 27th at 2pm. Shows will be performed at the outdoor UTC Amphitheatre located directly behind the UTC Fine Arts Building. Shakespeare’s most beloved clowns, the Mechanicals, are all nerds. This updated version brings the themes of love overcoming all odds to the forefront. UTC Fine Arts Center Presents Anthony Zerbe
Details:
Emmy Award winning screen and stage actor Anthony Zerbe returns to the UTC Fine Arts Center this season to captivate you with his nationally acclaimed performance It’s All Done With Mirrors ... an avalanche of E.E. Cummings. Zerbe provides joyous access to the art and energy of one of America’s most beloved poets, moving pell mell through a parade of characters, accents and dazzling word plays capturing in perfect moments Cummings favorite subjects. Like Cummings, Zerbe is an accomplished raconteur and his asides and anecdotes recall a time when conversation was considered an art form. It’s All Done With Mirrors is an uncommon mix of theatre and salon. Location: UTC Fine Arts Center |

Burkett Miller Distinguished Lecture Series feat. Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom
Details:
This year’s Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom will appear November 17, 2010 in the Burkett Miller Distinguished Lecture Series, addressing the topic “The Challenge of Self-Governance in Complex Contemporary Environments.” Elinor (Lin) Ostrom earned the Ph.D. in Political Science from UCLA in 1965 and is currently Senior Research Director at Indiana University’s Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis, which she co-founded in 1973. Dr. Ostrom is the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics “for her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons.” The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Ostrom’s “research brought this topic from the fringe to the forefront of scientific attention” “by showing how common resources – forests, fisheries, oil fields, or grazing lands – can be managed successfully by the people who use them, rather than by governments or private companies.” Ostrom’s work, in this regard, challenged conventional wisdom, showing that common resources can be successfully managed without government regulation or privatization. Sponsored by the Scott L. Probasco, Jr. Chair of Free Enterprise. This event takes place at noon in the University Center auditorium; is free and open to the public; and seating is limited to a first-come, first-served basis. |
