Southern Appalachian Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and is one of eight TRiO programs.  The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) is home to several other TRiO programs: Student Support Services, Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science.  GEAR UP is also located at UTC. All are part of The Center for Career and Community Education.                  

EOC was first funded in 1998. Our objectives are to help those that would like to get a GED, complete college admission applications, apply for financial aid and enroll in an accredited college.   We serve 1,000 people each year and target low income, first-generation adults, Veterans and their families, homeless youth, youth in foster care and other disadvantaged groups.                   

We partner with many local agencies and programs to provide college access:  United Way 211, First Things First, Tennessee National Guard, Partnership for Families and Children, Chattanooga State Community College, Dalton State College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College,  University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as well as many others. 

We serve the following counties:

  • Tennessee: Hamilton, Marion, Sequatchie, Bledsoe and Grundy Counties

  • Georgia: Walker, Dade, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray and Chattooga Counties
