Southeast Center for the Arts
The Southeast Center for Education in the Arts (SCEA) nurtures creative inquiry into teaching and learning. Innovative professional development programs in comprehensive arts education and school reform encourage kindergarten-college educators to establish the rigorous study of the arts as an integral component of basic education for all students.
As one of six regional institutes established in 1988 by the Getty Center for Education in the Arts, SCEA pioneered research in discipline-based dance, music, theatre, and visual arts education. Instructional materials and workshops enable teachers to actively engage students in aesthetic, historical, and critical inquiry, as well as in arts production. Current work focuses on employing arts education and arts integration to enhance learning and to transform schools.
SCEA personnel travel nationwide to facilitate meetings, teach classes, conduct workshops, and serve as consultants and writers for various professional associations and state education departments. Center directors have contributed to the writing of the National Standards for Arts Education and the INTASC Standards for Licensing Teachers.
An arts integration course for UTC education majors is team taught by SCEA directors each fall and spring at Battle Academy and Brown Academy. SCEA recently designed the course of study for video and web-based instruction for the Annenberg/Corporation for Public Broadcasting Channel. Three series are now airing nationally: The Arts in Every Classroom, Connecting with the Arts, and The Art of Teaching the Arts.
The Southeast Center fosters unique collaborations among people and institutions. It has significantly impacted local, state and national education policy and practice. The Tennessee Arts Commission has commissioned SCEA to develop a statewide professional development research initiative for arts integration. The Tennessee Arts Commission awarded the Southeast Center its 2003 Governor's Arts Leadership Award.

Student Government Association
The Student Government Association (SGA) at UTC is an active and vital campus organization. SGA provides funding to student organizations, gives initial approval to new student organizations, serves as a link between the student body and the administration, enacts legislation concerning current campus issues, and provides other valuable functions and services for the students at UTC. The SGA is described in detail in Chapter 7.
Student Handbooks
Distributed at the beginning of each academic year, the Student Handbook provides detailed information on student services and serves as a student/faculty directory. It also contains information on the Student Government Association and specific rules for the purpose of regulating campus life. These rules are stated in the Honor Code, Student Conduct Code, and other codes regulating groups.
Student Newspaper
The University Echo serves the University community not only as a ready source of campus news and other information of interest but also as the medium through which both student and faculty opinions can be presented, discussed, and recorded. Published weekly under the editorship of students, the Echo is supported by the University and is distributed free to all students. Interested students may apply for positions on the staff in reporting, editorial (news, features, sports writing, copy reading, etc.), business (advertising, sales, bookkeeping, etc.), or layout/design capacities by coming by the Echo offices in the University Center. The Echo also welcomes individual student letters.
Student Tickets
A validated Mocs ID card with a picture provides admission to the regular season home football, basketball, and wrestling events. These unreserved seats are in the student section and available on a first-come-first-served basis. There is a limited number of seats in the student section.
A student may purchase a guest ticket for the student section at a discount price to each home football and basketball game. These tickets may be purchased at the Student Ticket Office.
A student may purchase a spouse or guest ID with a picture for $15 per semester. These may also be purchased at the Student Ticket Office.
Student Support Services
The Division of Student Support Services, Project FOCUS (Facilitating Opportunity and Climate for Underrepresented Students) is a federally funded TRIO program that provides academic support to eligible students. Program services and activities are designed to increase the retention and graduation rates of participants. Students with low income, first generation college students (neither parent has a bachelor's degree), or students who have a documented disability may be eligible for participation. There is no charge to students for the following services and activities:
Peer Tutorials - The Peer Tutorial program provides additional assistance outside the classroom to students who have difficulty grasping specific course skills. The subjects for which assistance is offered are core courses taken by freshmen and sophomore students. Students are scheduled to work with a Peer Tutor on a weekly basis throughout the semester.
Career Counseling - This service helps students determine which careers are of particular interest to them and how to meet the University requirements for their major choice.
Academic Counseling - The project's Academic Counseling model identifies deficiencies that may impede students' success at UTC. Each student receives a diagnostic profile of his/her needs
