Upward Mobility Program Intern

The Chattanooga Housing Authority’s Upward Mobility Program is seeking a candidate for an unpaid internship opportunity to assist in with case management, direct service, and other duties as assigned. The Upward Mobility Program is progressively designed to promote economic self-sufficiency, education, and personal and professional development. This individual will work closely with the Upward Mobility Counselor and Upward Mobility Program participants and will be required to work between 12 – 18 hours per week for approximately 8-12 weeks.

Minimum qualifications include excellent communication, writing, oral, and soft-skills. Undergraduate junior and/or senior students majoring in psychology, sociology, social work, and/or other fields in humanities are preferred.

The CHA is willing to work with the successful candidates to satisfy college internship requirements, if needed.

Student Volunteer Program Summary

Duties

As a Student Volunteer, you will: Assist Special Agents and other personnel, plan and complete work assignments on time, collect and analyze relevant information, prepare quality draft documents, communicate relevant and accurate information clearly and concisely during formal or informal meetings, collaborate with others to accomplish goals, contribute to team efforts, use various enterprise tools and technology to prepare and share documents and other duties as assigned.

Eligibility

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be enrolled at least part-time in an accredited college/university
  • Must maintain student eligibility and enrollment throughout the duration of the program
  • Must have completed at least 60 undergraduate semester (90 quarter) hours from an accredited college/university
  • Must be majoring in Criminal Justice or business related fields (Accounting, Taxation, Finance, Banking, Economics, Business Law, Law)
  • Must pass an interview
  • This position requires students to complete a pre-employment background check that will include fingerprinting, drug testing and a tax check to ensure they are fully tax compliant.

Volunteers Needed at MDA Summer Camp

MDA is fighting to free individuals-and the families who love them-from the harmful effects of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases so they can live longer and grow stronger.  One of the most powerful ways that we do this is MDA Summer Camp!

Children living with muscle diseases face many unique challenges.  As their muscles progressively get weaker, these children often lose basic functions such as walking, dressing, eating, talking, or even breathing.  MDA Summer Camp offers a fun and safe camping experience, along with opportunities to participate in a variety of activities such as horseback riding, swimming, adaptive sports, arts and crafts, camp dances and much more. 

MDA relies on the support and dedication of volunteer counselors who are by campers’ sides day and night so that they can do all the fun activities that summer camp offers. 

Counselors, who serve as a “buddy” for the week, push wheelchairs, lift and transfer youngsters and provide assistance with activities as needed.  They also participate in activities with the campers.  This year, camp will be held from June 3-June 10 at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan.

Our ideal candidate is someone who sees light as only a true photographer can, understands direction but also is happy to inject his/her own ideas. Don’t be timid – let’s work together. We are not going to sugar coat it, some parts of this internship are standing next to lights with a tripod and take photo after photo after photo of product. Not at all glamorous, but there is also a lot of room for creativity in the other areas of this internship producing photos for our social media accounts.

The main project is to create a wholesale portal for the site. We have a plan and have most of the contacts in place, however, it’s time to bring you in to finish the job. 

Our ideal candidate is someone who needs little direction and has the understanding of code needed to complete the tasks. The candidate doesn’t have to have all the answers, but must have the skills to find the answers needed to learn the answers.

Tutor Volunteers Needed

Hatch’s House of Hope offers a volunteer based tutoring program to affected children and siblings.  The need for a tutoring program to address the cognitive deficits created or worsened by cancer treatment in a pediatric population is highlighted in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, which states that survivors of pediatric cancer who did not receive special education services had lower educational attainments than their siblings.  The primary goal of the tutoring program is to bridge the gap in access to academic support experienced by affected children and siblings.

Hatch’s House of Hope is seeking volunteers with strong academic backgrounds to provide a minimum of one hour per week of tutoring to a child impacted by pediatric cancer. Matching tutors with students will be tailored to the interest of the tutor and the specific academic needs of the student.

We hope you will consider volunteering your time and talents to the service of children and their families who are dealing with the impact of pediatric cancer.

Volunteers Needed at Cine-Rama

We are looking for volunteers at Cine-Rama on Main St. Shifts typically last 1.5 - 2 hours, but they'll be informed well ahead of time if it's longer than that. Because it is volunteer work, it is unpaid.

Cine-Rama is an locally owned and operated nonprofit art house theater that runs mostly off of volunteer work. Responsibilities include handling a cash box, interacting with customers in a friendly and positive manner, checking tickets, operating Shopify's point of sale system, projection, being informed of upcoming events, etc. Responsibilities vary depending on need and interest.

Internships are not yet available, but an internship program is currently being put in place.

Employment Services Volunteers will serve as job coaches and job developers, as well as assist the Employment Specialist. Volunteers will also have the chance for hands on learning by accompanying the Employment Specialist to meetings with potential employers, job coaching with clients, and participating in mock interviews. This opportunity is a great way to get experience working with individuals and veterans with disabilities!

Homework Helpers - Girls Inc. of Chattanooga is in need of homework helpers for the Bookworm Club program and would love to the community get involved. The program is Monday and Tuesday at Woodmore Elementary School in Brainerd and Wednesday and Thursday at East Ridge Elementary School.  We need homework helpers from 4-5 p.m. and general volunteers 3-4 p.m. and 5-6 p.m.  Volunteers should contact Katherine Walker at 423-624-4757.    A minimum commitment of 20 hours is required.
