The Tennessee Aquarium is searching for a part time Tour Guide Naturalist to deliver an entertaining and educational script with enthusiasm while aboard the River Gorge Explorer.  This position assists in carrying out the mission of the Aquarium through helping people gain an appreciation and better understanding of the world, particularly freshwater ecosystems, and a sense of stewardship for the earth and all its resources. 

Key Duties

  1. Greet visitors and assist with boarding and debarking, providing assistance for visitors with special needs.
  2. Ensure visitors have a positive and memorable experience by providing a very high level of customer service.
  3. Perform deckhand responsibilities as assigned by the captain including vessel maintenance/cleaning, cabin servicing and cleaning, manning concession area, etc.
  4. Train for and respond to onboard emergencies.
  5. Execute and maintain core values and service standards in support of the Education Department’s and the Aquarium’s missions and visions.

Additional Duties

Participate in special assignments such as marketing programs and promotions; respond to visitor inquiries; successfully complete training and random drug testing as required by Coast Guard and other regulating agencies.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of biological principles, history and geology of Chattanooga
  • Good communication skills with an outgoing personality; ability to work comfortably with children
  • Ability to use computers and software programs used for presentations
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Science background via education or experience preferred.
  • Experience working with the public (presentation/performance experience a plus)
  • Theater background/experience is a plus.

License or Certification Requirements (training provided)

  • CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Coast Guard training associated with working aboard a vessel

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Crowded and loud environments
  • Work aboard a 70-passenger catamaran-type, high-speed tour vessel
  • Frequent wet, hot and/or cold conditions; daily exposure to inside/outside elements aboard the vessel
  • Frequent walking, stooping, lifting/transporting (up to 50 lbs), and climbing up and down stairs between decks
  • Operational duties aboard the vessel such as docking, tying up, boarding passengers, moving ramps

THEC hosts interns during each Fall, Spring, and Summer term in the Policy, Research, and Fiscal Affairs division. Positions are open to undergraduate and graduate students with relevant experience and acceptable qualifications. THEC’s internship program offers participants the opportunity to learn from and contribute to the Commission’s ongoing efforts to coordinate higher education in Tennessee, advance student access and completion, and produce a more educated workforce. While interns are typically housed in the Policy, Research, and Fiscal Affairs division, opportunities for collaboration with other THEC divisions is encouraged and may be arranged.

Internships are paid positions, and interns may earn academic or professional credit for participation.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of interns is to support the Policy, Research, and Fiscal Affairs (or designated) division by:

  • Collaborating with state and agency experts in postsecondary education policy to develop research ideas and/or policy recommendations;
  • Conducting literature reviews and policy scans on issues related to college readiness, access, financial aid, and success;
  • Attending and summarizing education-related meetings and legislative hearings;
  • Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to inform policy analysis, development, and recommendations;
  • Developing evidence-based materials to support the Commission’s operation; and
  • Assisting in administrative work.

Qualifications

Ideal applicants will possess an interest in higher education policy, supplemented by research or advocacy-based experience in the field, in addition to:

  • General knowledge of higher education issues from a state and/or national level;
  • Demonstrated experience in examining educational challenges from an empiric and public policy perspective;
  • Strong analytical and/or research skills, including use of Excel and/or SPSS/Stata for analysis; and
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • A current student or recent graduate of a baccalaureate program in statistics, public policy, education, or a related discipline.
  • Currently enrolled in (or accepted to) a graduate program in statistics, public policy, education, or a related discipline.

Girl Scouts is seeking enthusiastic and outdoor-loving seasonal, weekend camp staff at Camp Adahi on Lookout Mountain (address is technically Menlo, GA).

We are looking for archery instructors, boating/canoeing instructors, equestrian staff, kitchen assistant, and lifeguards

Training is provided for each position and staff are cross trained to do multiple things (which equals more hours!) The pay starts at $12 per hour and we guarantee minimum 2 hours of work for the weekends these staff commit to working.

Our camp season is primarily in the warmer months – April through early June and then August through November (we do not have summer work at this location though we are hiring for summer camp staff at our Knoxville camp!).

  • Expertise with design and media development tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Macromedia, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Sound Booth, or other audio editing tools, and HTML preferred
  • Demonstrated competency with Windows OS preferred
  • Strong instructional design, writing and oral communication skills.
  • Strong aesthetic, design composition and typographic abilities.
