Any student at UTC who meets the academic criteria may apply to pursue departmental honors, but most who do so are Brock Scholars. Every Brock Scholar must either complete a Departmental Honors (DHON) thesis or spend at least one semester studying abroad. Brock Scholars are encouraged, though not required, to do both.
The Departmental Thesis is a two-semester, 4 credit hour independent project undertaken by students in their major departments, working closely with a major faculty director. It is an opportunity to engage deeply with a subject of particular interest, to build a collaborative relationship with a faculty mentor, and to contribute original scholarship to one's academic discipline. The thesis provides an excellent foundation for graduate-level research, and many departmental theses have led to publication in scholarly journals.
Students who successfully complete the Departmental Thesis earn Departmental Honors or Highest Departmental Honors in their majors:
- Departmental Honors requires a 3.2 overall GPA and a 3.5 GPA in the major.
- Highest Departmental Honors requires a 3.5 overall GPA and a 3.75 in the major.
