Any student at UTC who meets the academic criteria may apply to pursue departmental honors, but most who do so are Brock Scholars. Every Brock Scholar must either complete a Departmental Honors (DHON) thesis or spend at least one semester studying abroad. Brock Scholars are encouraged, though not required, to do both.
The Departmental Thesis is a two-semester, 4 credit hour independent project undertaken by students in their major departments, working closely with a major faculty director. It is an opportunity to engage deeply with a subject of particular interest, to build a collaborative relationship with a faculty mentor, and to contribute original scholarship to ones academic discipline. The thesis provides an excellent foundation for graduate-level research, and many departmental theses have led to publication in scholarly journals.
Students who successfully complete of the Departmental Thesis earn Departmental Honors or Highest Departmental Honors in their majors:
- Departmental Honors requires a 3.2 overall GPA and a 3.5 GPA in the major.
- Highest Departmental Honors requires a 3.5 overall GPA and a 3.75 in the major.
