Romp in the Swamp 2008 Summary

Saturday:

Game 1: Dayton (13-5)

The day started out well with a quick lead against a young Dayton “X/Y” team. Half at 7-3 and the game was never really close. Our D-line shut down everything Dayton tried to do and our hip-pocket D force several bad throws right off the bat. We got up a few points early and never looked back.

Game 2: West Virginia (13-7)

WVU‘s first game of the day. UTC started out on D again and came up with a few more pressure turnovers. WVU had better cuts and better deep throws than our first game, but still fell far short as we finished without a cap.

*Highlight of the day: Early in the WVU game, Bryan Klein made a ridiculous leaping grab out of bounds and managed to throw a perfectly flat backhand back into the end zone. Cody Moesely completed the “greatest” with an amazing layout snag. The ensuing celebration was tiring, and it was fun seeing T-Roc celebrate like an 8th grade girl.

Game 3: Purdue (11-5)

Purdue had the best group of athletes we faced all day, but lacked the handles of our experienced O-line. Again, our defense played big-time. The game started off with a poor decision on my part. I underestimated Purdue’s redhead and he out-jumped me to a disc just shy of the end zone. Purdue quickly converted to the score and the game was off. A good portion of the first half was close, but again, UTC had a half-time lead and never trailed after the first few points.

Game 4: UT-Y (and Denmark) (13-9)

Our final game of the day was our biggest challenge. UT threw their best game at us and we took it like a champ. This was one of the few times that our defense was repeatedly forced off the field after only one point. However, the Swamp Donkey offense stepped up to the challenge and scored with malice. We lost focus towards the end and basically traded points until 13.

Sunday:

Quarterfinals: Valdosta State (12-6)

Valdosta and UTC have a long history of camaraderie dating back to the 2004 Dave Baldwin Memorial tournament in Knoxville. The game started out 5-0 due to a rock-solid zone by the Donkeys and a vicious cross-wind. Zach Robbins provided some masterful pulls to set the Blazers deep in their own territory to start points.

The Valdosta team played valiantly with a savage squad and mounted a strong second half to close the gap in the final score. After the game, the first “tree-face” award was presented to a Valdosta player that showed exemplary characteristics on offense and defense (duh, they’re savage). I can’t remember his name, but he was about 12 feet in the air on a couple grabs.

Semifinals: UT-Y (without Denmark) (13-3)

The game began with both teams trading points on a relatively windy field. Again, the wind blew across the field and made it difficult to throw the disc any way other than short and flat…that’s what she said. After being down 2-3, UTC went on an 11 point run to take the game 13-3. About half-way through the game, the weather began to turn ugly with a slight drizzle and then a very cold, hard rain.

Finals: Auburn (11-11)

The finals were hard fought against a 10 man Auburn squad. By the time the game started the hard rain had turned into a downpour with driving winds. Our offense began the game with a score even after sitting the last 11 points of the UT game. The defense quickly returned the favor and made the score 2-0. Auburn came right back with 2 scores of their own. After swapping points, UTC finished the half up 7-5. After moving to 8-6, Auburn went on a run and took the lead 10-11. After a very hard fought point, the Donkeys managed to fly one into the end zone to tie the score at 11. Shortly before the pull, a thunderous lightning strike occurred and ended the game abruptly. While no one likes a tie, both teams were glad to escape the cold, windy, rainy weather.

Clean-up sucked. Thanks to the guys who stayed.

Chef Lin:
One great thing about the end of tournaments: you can eat as much as you want. Chef Lin helped us out here by having tray after tray of chicken, rice, sushi, crab legs, fruit, “must try” mango…jelly?,  and all the other things that you find at an Asian buffet. After dinner, everyone dibs-ed the remaining tournament food. I was able to come away with about 45 pounds of sport drink mix and 6 cookies.
