Melissa: Ok lets get into some campus news, In campus news Among the eight remaining planets astronomers chose to keep in our solar system, the mysterious Red Planet remains.One UTC chemistry professor has brought Mars down to Earth, through laboratory exploration on the UTC campus and in California. In a three-year research project funded by NASA, Dr. Steven Symes is collaborating with Dr.
Lars Borg, Research Scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to conduct chronological and mineralogical studies of Martian meteorites, NASA-Mars Fundamental Research Program.“This project is concerned with a question planetary scientists have been asking for decades: ‘When was liquid water present on Mars?’” Symes said.
In other campus news: Photographs taken of Viking missions to Mars in the mid-70s have provided evidence that supports the theory that liquid water was a once stable phase on the Martia surface.Cleveland businesswoman Brenda Lawson recently increased her giving to the UT system, pledging $10 million in the last five years.
In her recent pledge, Lawson provided UTC with $1.5 million to support three areas: the new pedestrian mall, the Women’s Success Program, and the Chancellor’s Excellence Fund.
Felicia: In local news A Fire destroyed a home in the Middle Valley area. Investigators say the owners of the home at 7357 McCormack Drive smelled smoke around 2:30am but found nothing. Then at 5am, they woke up again to find heavy smoke and fire pouring from the attic and the back of the house. The couple managed to escape the burning house with their pets. No one was injured but the house is judged a total loss with damages estimated to be $175,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In other local news Chattanooga police have arrested a wrecker service owner and charged him with auto theft. Police booked Buddy Frazier, Sr.
.Investigators say he picked up abandoned cars, crushed them then sold for scrap metal before the owners could picked them up.

Melissa : In national news in FARGO, North Dakota -- A federal jury decided Thursday that the sex offender convicted of kidnapping college student Dru Sjodin, killing her and leaving her body in Minnesota ravine is eligible for the death penalty.The jury now must decide whether Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. should be sentenced to death for the murder. That phase of the trial is scheduled to begin Monday afternoon.The same jury of seven women and five men found Rodriguez, 53, guilty last week of a federal charge of kidnapping resulting in death. Sjodin, 22, of Pequot Lake, Minnesota, was a University of North Dakota student when she was abducted from the parking lot of a Grand Forks shopping mall on November 22, 2003.

Lets into our sports Now lets get into our sportsThe Chattanooga men’s and women’s cross country teams are both tabbed to finish second in the 2006 season, voted on by the Southern Conference cross country head coaches.
The Chattanooga women’s team fell to Davidson in the preseason poll by one point with Davidson garnering seven first place votes for a total of 94, and Chattanooga receiving three for a total of 93.
The Southern Conference Cross Country Championships are hosted by Chattanooga at Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Sat., Oct. 28.The football television show, “Chattanooga Football with Coach Rodney Allison,” will begin airing this week on WDSI-TV Fox 61.The local television channel will broadcast the weekly show’s first installment this Friday at 5:30 p.m. on cable channel 11, pre-empting the syndicated show “Friends” in that time slot.The show will also air at noon on Saturday. And this saturday the mocs will be on the road as they take on the Memphis Tigers .
