Felicia: <VO>----TAKE VTR---- On campus, SGA is hosting a September 11 th, Vigil tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the top of cardiac hill. Also tonight, the Theatre and Philosophy departments will have a showing of the Documentary “Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero.” There will be two opportunities for you to watch: tonight and tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. in the Raccoon mountain room in the University Center. In other campus news : An open house at the Center for Physical Activity and Health Enhancement is scheduled for tonight from 3-6 p.m. for the Chancellor’s Challenge in Room 115 of the McKenzie Arena. This facility is open to all faculty and staff for a low monthly fee. Sign up for door prizes and incentives. The Chancellor’s Challenge consists of team events designed by the Department of Health and Human Performance to encourage UTC students, faculty and staff to develop healthy lifestyles. A cash award and special prize will be awarded to one student and one faculty or staff member for participation. Melissa In local news: Crime has been on the rise with the recent increase of metal prices. Local police say that empty houses are prime targets. Thieves have been stripping copper and metal from electrical wires or air conditioning units. The selling price for copper has more than tripled to $3 per pound in the past few months, according to local metal processors. Bob McNutt, senior vice president of development for Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprises, has spent over $25,000 in the past two months to replace stolen water pipes and stripped air conditioning units.
In other local news: Gov. Sonny Perdue of Georgia recently pitched a program called " Georgia Secure ID" to stop illegal immigrants from using phony documents to obtain official drivers licenses fraudulently. This has caused problems with some of the local immigrant advocacy groups in the state but Gov. Perdue, taking into consideration the threat of terrorism, said he will ask the General Assembly for $1 million and 13 new employees next year to crack down on immigrants using phony papers to get a driver license or other state identification cards. Felicia Now lets get into sports The UTC Moc’s football game on Saturday against Memphis resulted in a 33-14 loss. Trailing the Mocs 7-6 after one quarter, the Tigers tacked on two field goals and a touchdown run to take the lead . UTC’s running back, Eldra Buckly went over the 100-yard mark for the fifth straight game dating back to last season. The senior collected 105 yards on 24 carries and led the Mocs in receiving with five catches for 20 yards. The Lady Mocs volleyball team posted its first win of the season on September 8 th with a four-game triumph over Lamar on the first night of the Holiday Inn Expresss Challenge . The team lost a tough five-game match to Birmingham Southern on September 9 th and was swept by Eastern Kentucky. Kelsey Amundson’s 17 kills led UTC in the beginning of the game She added 23 digs for a second straight double-double. Leslee Ball’s 16 kills and 12 digs were good for her third consecutive double-double. Ball hit .306 for the match. The team will play again on Wednesday as the Lady Mocs open Southern Conference play, hosting Appalachian State at Maclellan Gym.
