Your first year at The Universtiy of Tennessee at Chattanooga is critical laying the foundation for a successful academic and professional career. In order to make sure that the tranisition to UTC is a smooth one, we have created the First Year Experience. The program is designed to be an intregrasted approach to assisting UTC students in developing those skills that will allow them to be successful at UTC. This begins by:

  • Developing IIntellectual and Academic Competence
  • Developing Your Personal Identity and Philosophy
  • Making Meaningful Connections with the UTC Community
  • Developing Health and Safety Strategies
  • Serving the Campus and Chattanooga Community
UTC's First Year Experience is an outstanding program that assists first-year students accomplish these tasks. Many components of the program are designed for students who have not yet decided on an academic major. However, there are aspects of the program thast are apporpriate for ANY student entering their first year ot study at UTC.

The First Year Expecience Program is coordinated by the Office for New Student Programs in coordination with many offices in both the Division of Academic Affairs and the Division of Student Development.   The First Year Experience begins right after you are admtted to UTC, when you come to one of our many Orientation Programs. The major programs are more fully explained below.

Freshman SeminarFreshman Seminar is a three credit-hour elective course that is designed to help students new to UTC develop academic and social connections within the community. It offers beginning UTC students the opportunity to participate in a small class taught by a faculty, staff, or administrators and a specially-selected peer educator. The course allows students to develop a sense of community and belonging to UTC, as well as to develop academic skills in the context of a rigorous, content-specific course.

Freshman Connections The Freshman Connections program continues a process that begins with orientation sessions in the spring and summer. Professors from various academic departments across campus collaborate with the student support staff to create an environment in which students meet these challenges as part of a learning community.

Connections cohorts are organized around a theme or academic area. So, in addition to taking classes in common with a small group of fellow students, in a FC cohort you can satisfy degree requirements, discover connections between your academic and social experiences, and develop a sense of community among fellow students.

ResConnections The ResConnections Program residential component collection of programs in Lockmiller and Stagmeier Halls.  First-year students residing in other halls are welcome to participate in many of the ResConnect programs and services.  The staff in the ResConnect areas is dedicated to go the extra mile to ensure freshmen success.  The staff will seek out students intentionally to provide them with personal contact and outstanding programs.

The Resident Assistant (RA) lives on the floor with the residents and is responsible for developing a healthy community. In addition to the RA, there will be an Educational Peer Assistants (EPA) who lives in the community and is responsible for assisting first-year students in their academic transition to UTC.

Summer Reading Program First-Year students will also share a common academic exeprience. The program involves reading an assigned book over the summer, and participating in a discussion group with select faculty and staff members during the W.O.W. program.

It will also be discussed in all ENGL 121 and Freshman Seminar classes. This is an opportunity for you to connect with members of Chattanooga's learning community and to share a common academic experience with your fellow first year students.

New Student Orientation During Orientation, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with current UTC student mentors, learn about campus life, receive academic advisement from qualified faculty, and register for fall classes.

You will also be given lots of information on a wide variety of campus services. Our goal is to set the stage to prepare you for success in all of the social and academic coming attractions waiting for you at UTC.

Weeks of Welcome (W.O.W.) The UTC Weeks of Welcome or WOW! (as we like to call it) is a program specifically designed to get the new student connected to the academic and social life of the campus. It is a two week program that is filled with fun (with a little bit of learning mixed in).

We kick off WOW! with our New Student Convocation and end it with our traditional Oak Street Roast.
