Lucien Ellington

Lucien Ellington is Co-director of the Asia Program and UC Foundation Professor of Education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He holds advanced degrees in history, economics education, and education, and is also a Foreign Policy Research Institute Marvin Wachman Senior Fellow. He is the recipient of scholarship and grant writing awards at UTC. Before becoming a university professor, Ellington was a high school teacher for nine years.

Dr. Ellington is the founding editor of Education About Asia, an international teaching journal published by the Association for Asian Studies. He has authored three books and numerous articles on Japan/ Ellington has edited eleven books on Asia for general readers, authored a forthcoming book, Focus Upon Japan (ABC-CLIO, June 2009), and is currently editor of the Association for Asian Studies Key Issues in Asian Studies, a series of booklets for university and high school students.

Ellington has also served as a consultant for more than 100 teacher institutes on Japan throughout the United States and co-directed eleven study tours of Japan for schoolteachers. Currently, Ellington serves as the Tennessee coordinator for the Freeman Foundation-funded National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, and is responsible for teaching and supervising courses on the histories of China, Japan, and the Koreas for educators.

In addition to Asian studies, Ellington is involved in research and writing on K-12 school reform. He has published two national studies, co-edited a publication on social studies reform for the Fordham Foundation, and served as a contributor to three other Fordham Foundation history and social studies national studies.
