The NATIONAL CONSORTIUM FOR TEACHING ABOUT ASIA (NCTA), funded by the Freeman Foundation, is a multi-year initiative to encourage and facilitate teaching and learning about Asia in world history, geography, social studies, and literature courses.
Launched in October 1998, this nationwide program is a collaboration of the East Asian Studies programs of five national institutions: Columbia University, the Five College Center for East Asian Studies, Indiana University, the University of Colorado, and the University of Washington.
Since its inception NCTA has established introductory seminars for teachers in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) is conducting two NCTA seminars in Tennessee locations in June 2008: One in Chattanooga and one in Nashville.
- Short-term programs and a curriculum materials library for NCTA alumni and for other teachers interested in Asia.
- The Asia Program is hosting the Foreign Policy Research Institute national history teacher institute on China in March 2008. This is the second conference in Chattanooga and also the second to take place outside the Philadelphia area.
- In 2009, NCTA and the Asia Program will sponsor a study tour of Japan. Details will be posted on this site as they become available.
