2010 Seminar Information Now Available!

The NATIONAL CONSORTIUM FOR TEACHING ABOUT ASIA (NCTA), funded by the Freeman Foundation, is a multi-year initiative to encourage and facilitate teaching and learning about Asia in world history, geography, social studies, and literature courses.

Launched in October 1998, this nationwide program is a collaboration of the East Asian Studies programs of five national institutions: Columbia University, the Five College Center for East Asian Studies, Indiana University, the University of Colorado, and the University of Washington.

Since its inception, NCTA has established introductory seminars for teachers in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

To learn more about NCTA, and for information about individual state seminars, please visit the NCTA Web site. The Asia Program at the UTC offers the following NCTA activities:

  • The 12th annual NCTA seminar for teachers in Tennessee and the surrounding region of Chattanooga in 2010.
  • Short-term programs and a curriculum materials library for NCTA alumni and for other teachers interested in Asia.
  • Study tours of East Asia for NCTA alumni in 2008 and 2010.
