Receive Stipends and Curriculum Materials
The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) and the East Asian Curriculum Project of Columbia University have selected Chattanooga and Nashville as the locations for the 2009 seminar on China, Japan, and Korea. The purpose of the seminar is to increase knowledge of the histories and cultures of these countries. This seminar is funded by the generosity of the Freeman Foundation.
Seminar leader Lucien Ellington is Co-director of the UTC Asia Program and UC Foundation Professor of Education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is the author of several books on Japan and is the Editor of the educational journal, Education About Asia.
Tennessee and North Georgia teachers, media specialists, and administrators in elementary, middle, and high schools who would like to learn more about East Asia and include Asia content in their curricula are eligible to apply.
In order to receive stipends and materials, participants must:
- Attend both sessions--one on Saturday, April 25 and one on Saturday, October 3,2009 from the location closest to your home
- Complete five brief online assignments.
- Obtain verification from your principal or supervisor that, if returning to your current school in the fall of 2009, you will teach at least one section of Social Studies, World History, World Geography, World Literature, World Languages, Art, or Music. If you are an elementary teacher or media specialist, your supervisor must verify that some of your instructional time may be spent on Asia.
- More than one application per school is encouraged.
Read the brochure, complete the application, and mail or fax, along with your short essay that explains why you are interested in learning about East Asia and how you envision using this knowledge in your classes, to Peggy at the address below.
