Chattanooga Seminar Brochure (pdf)
The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) and the East Asian Curriculum Project of Columbia University have selected Chattanooga as the site of a special seminar on China, Japan, and Korea. The purpose of the seminar is to increase knowledge of the histories and cultures of these countries. This seminar is funded by the generosity of the Freeman Foundation.
Seminar leader Lucien Ellington is Co-director of the UTC Asia Program and UC Foundation Professor of Education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is the author of several books on Japan and is the Editor of the educational journal, Education About Asia.
The 25 teachers selected for the seminar will each receive a $500.00 stipend distributed in two installments and $200.00 worth of materials on China, Japan, and Korea. All enrolled teachers, after completing all aspects of the seminar, will receive an additional $300.00 to purchase materials on East Asia for their school.
Teachers and librarians in Chattanooga and surrounding counties in elementary, middle, and high schools who would like to learn more about East Asia and include Asia content in their curricula are eligible to apply.
In order to receive stipends and materials, participants must:
- Attend all sessions including the follow up session one Saturday morning in late fall.
- Complete readings and assignments.
- Develop approved lesson and action plans.
- Obtain verification from your principal or supervisor that, if returning to your current school in the fall of 2008, you will teach at least one section of Social Studies, World History, World Geography, World Literature or Art. If you are an elementary teacher or librarian, your supervisor must verify that some of your instructional time may be spent on Asia.
- More than one application per school is encouraged.
To apply for this seminar, please complete the Seminar Application (pdf), print, and fax or mail it, along with your essay, to the address provided on the application, on or before Friday, May 23. Applications are considered in the order they are received
