History
Upward Bound started across the country in 1965, arriving at UTC in 1968. It started as a way to help local underprivileged youth acquire the resources to graduate from high school and to get accepted to college.
Upward Bound has served Howard and Brainerd since it first began, but it has also served Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts, Kirkman Technical High School and Tyner High School. The summer of 2003, East Ridge High School was added to the program.
Upward Bound is not a camp, or a one-time thing for its members. Students are members of the program until they graduate from high school, are dismissed or fail to come back to Saturday and Summer sessions.
