In 1987, the Getty Center for Education in the Arts, based in Los Angeles at the Getty, established six regional institutes in California, Florida, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas to research and promote discipline-based visual arts education. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga had the foresight to expand the concept to embrace music and theatre education. This multi-arts approach has made the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts (SCEA) an exemplary model for innovative professional development and education reform.

Building on our seminal work in discipline-based arts education, we incorporate emerging theories and methodologies into interdisciplinary education and concept-based integration. As a professional development provider, SCEA collaborates with schools and organizations across the country providing consulting services, demonstrating integrated instruction, and crafting custom site-specific programs. Personnel travel nationwide teaching classes, conducting workshops, working on committees, and serving as consultants and writers for professional organizations and state education departments.

Teaching

SCEA directors teach in a variety of venues including workshops in Chattanooga and on-site at public and private pre-K-12 schools, courses at UTC, arts residencies, and sessions at conferences. Distance learning and evolving technology are being explored as integral components of contemporary education and a means of communication with wide-ranging audiences.

Writing

SCEA's research and experience with standards-based curricula led to the writing of seminal conceptual frameworks for discipline-based dance, music, theatre, and visual art education. More than 50 units of study with poster reproductions and CD-ROMS were developed. Current writing by Center personnel is focused on multi-arts education, concept-based arts integration, inquiry-based teaching, reflective practice, and school reform.
