BESSIE BUS

The Center collaborated with Bessie Smith Hall and the Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department in a summer project known as Bessie Bus which brought authentic blues and jazz "informances" to area children in selected recreation centers in Chattanooga. SCEA provided educational guidance for hands-on activities in which students learned about the instruments, musical elements and history of the blues and its contribution to the development of jazz. They also created their own blues compositions and wrote about their responses to the music, the performers and the blues legacy in today's music.

CHATTANOOGA SYMPHONY AND OPERA

The Music Institute provides annual docent training and creates instructional materials for preparing students to attend Young People's Symphony concerts, Operas Tell Stories performances, and dress rehearsals of fall and spring productions by the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Association. A series of training workshops have assisted musicians in improving the educational content of their residency presentations.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC SYMPOSIUM

SCEA personnel designed and taught a series of workshops for a multi-arts unit entitled Transcendent Voices: The Work of Artists in Isolation. This unit was developed to prepare students for the performance of Oliver Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time at a Contemporary Music Symposium held by the UTC Music Department.

SOUTHERN TRADITIONS DAY

For several years in collaboration with the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Music Institute presented a day-long celebration of southern traditions including spirituals, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, banjo, hammered dulcimer, buck dancing, folklore and traditional crafts. Summer institutes participants had the opportunity to learn about the rich musical resources of the region and to see and hear local and regional artists available for residencies.

TRAVELING TRUNKS

A collaboration with the Creative Discovery Museum involved in the design and implementation of a Traveling Trunks unit of study which integrated science, art, music and language arts. The unit of study toured to area schools under the leadership of UTC education students who were trained in its implementation.
