During 2009, SCEA personnel had direct contact as artists, teachers, mentors, presenters, committee members,
and consultants with 4435 individuals from 64 organizations.


JANUARY 2009

January 20-23: Music Cohorts Mentoring
Susanne Burgess conducted onsite professional development and classroom-based mentoring for members of the Music Cohorts at John Clancy and Lincoln Elementary Schools in New Orleans, LA.

January 31: Introduction to Arts Integration
Joel Baxley, Marissa Nesbit, and Kim Wheetley conducted a workshop on Curriculum Inquiry: A Discussion of Arts Integration for Kansas City School of the Arts faculty members and artists from Kansas City Young Audiences in Kansas City, MO.


FEBRUARY 2009

February 2-5: Dance and Visual Art Cohorts Mentoring
Marissa Nesbit and Joel Baxley conducted onsite professional development and classroom-based mentoring for members of the dance and visual art cohorts at John Clancy and Lincoln Elementary Schools in New Orleans, LA.

February 12: Music and Literacy Workshop
Susanne Burgess conducted a Music and Literacy in Early Childhood workshop with teachers, aides, and administrators at Best Beginnings Preschool in Chattanooga, TN.

February 17, 24, 26: Dance and Language Arts Residency
Marissa Nesbit conducted a dance and language arts residency with 4th grade students at Barger Academy of Fine Arts in Chattanooga, TN.

February 20: Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy
Joel Baxley served on the arts curriculum planning committee for the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy.

February 22: College Board Meeting
Kim Wheetley participated in a meeting of the College Board's National Task Force on the Arts in Education in Dallas, TX.


MARCH 2009

March 2-3: Dance and Visual Art Cohorts Mentoring
Onsite professional development and classroom-based mentoring for members of the dance and visual art cohorts was conducted at Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts & Education in Wilson, NC.

March 5: Allied Arts Education Committee
Kim Wheetley served on the Arts Education Committee for Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga.

March 5-7: North Carolina: State of the Arts Conference
Susanne Burgess attended the North Carolina: State of the Arts Conference in Raleigh, NC.

March 9-11: Music Cohorts Mentoring
Onsite professional development and classroom-based mentoring for members of the music cohorts was conducted at Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts & Education in Wilson, NC.

March 23, 30 & April 6: Dance Residency
Marissa Nesbit conducted a dance and poetry arts integrated residency with 4th grade classes at Battle Academy for Teaching and Learning in Chattanooga, TN.

March & April: Visual Art Residency
Joel Baxley conducted a bookmaking/illustration residency with 3rd grade classes at Battle Academy for Teaching and Learning in Chattanooga, TN.


APRIL 2009

April 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21: Music Residency
Susanne Burgess conducted a music residency with kindergarten classes at Battle Academy for Teaching and Learning in Chattanooga, TN.

April 14: Visual Art Residency
Joel Baxley conducted a visual art residency Australian Aboriginal Paintng with 7th grade students at Signal Mountain Middle High School in Chattanooga, TN.

April 15-17: International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education
Susanne Burgess attended the second International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education in Gainesville, FL.

April 21: Visual Art Residency
Joel Baxley conducted a visual art residency Chinese Painting and Calligraphy with 7th grade students at Signal Mountain Middle High School in Chattanooga, TN.

April 23-25: Dance, Music, and Visual Art Cohorts Mentoring
Onsite professional development and classroom-based mentoring for members of the dance, music and visual art cohorts was conducted at Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts and Education in Wilson, NC.

April 28: Visual Art Residency
Joel Baxley conducted a visual art residency Mask and Literature with 7th grade students at Signal Mountain Middle High School in Chattanooga, TN.


MAY 2009

May 2: American Orff Schulwerk Association: Southern Appalachian Chapter
Susanne Burgess was a workshop organizer and facilitator at a meeting of the Southern Appalachian Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association hosted by the Department of Music at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

May 8-9: 2nd Annual Arts & Education Forum
Arts Integration and Teacher Change
Professional development providers, researchers, school administrators, university faculty, teacher leaders, teaching artists, and personnel from arts organizations and state departments from across the country met in Chattanooga to consider dilemmas encountered in providing effective professional development in arts integration.


JUNE 2009

March 10: Allied Arts Education Committee
Kim Wheetley served on the Arts Education Committee for Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga.

June 15 - July 3: Kodaly Institute
Susanne Burgess participated in a Level II Kodaly Certification Course hosted by the Department of Music at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.


JULY 2009

July 8-10: Maine Course Pathways Project
Joel Baxley reviewed high school visual and performing arts syllabi for the Maine Department of Education's Course Pathways Project in Augusta, ME.

July 14: SCEA Strategic Planning
Val Marmillion, president of Marmillion + Company met with SCEA directors in Chattanooga to begin a comprehensive strategic planning and communications project.

July 20-24: Professional Development in Arts Integration
Susanne Burgess, Joel Baxley, Marissa Nesbit, and Laurie Melnik conducted an intensive workshop for faculty members at Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts & Education in Wilson, NC.


AUGUST 2009

August 10: American Alliance for Theatre & Education/Association for Theatre in Higher Education Joint Conference
Laurie Melnik presented a workshop From Game to Page: An Approach to Play Devising at the AATE/ATHE Conference in New York City. She also served on the AATE Membership Committee and as Co-Chair of the AATE Professional Development Committee.

August 18, 21, 24: Hunter Museum and UTC Medical Center
Laurie Melnik served on the Arts and Medicine Curriculum Planning committee for a collaborative program with the Hunter Museum of American Art and the UTC Medical School.

August 22: American Orff Schulwerk Association: Southern Appalachian Chapter
Susanne Burgess presented a workshop on Guiding Student Creativity Through the Orff-Schulwerk Process at a meeting of the Southern Appalachian Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association hosted by the Department of Music at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

August 25: UTC Department of Theatre and Speech
Laurie Melnik and Kim Wheetley met representatives of the UTC Department of Theatre and Speech to discuss revising the theatre education program.

August 26: Grant Writing Meeting
Susanne Burgess consulted with the Creative Discovery Museum and United Way of Chattanooga regarding the writing of a grant to the Tennesasee Higher Education Commission.


SEPTEMBER 2009

September 8-11: Cohorts Mentoring
Marissa Nesbit, Susanne Burgess, Joel Baxley, and Laurie Melnik conducted professional development and classroom-based mentoring for members of the dance, music, theatre, and visual art cohorts at Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts and Education in Wilson, NC.

September 9 & 14: Grant Writing Meeting
Joel Baxley consulted with teachers at Thrasher Elementary School in Signal Mountain, TN regarding the writing of a grant for a spring visual art residency.

September 11: Grant Writing Meeting
Joel Baxley consulted with teachers at Battle Academy in Chattanooga, TN regarding the writing of a grant for a spring visual art residency.

September 15, 24, 28: Hunter Museum and UTC Medical Center
Laurie Melnik served on the Arts and Medicine Curriculum Planning committee for a collaborative program with the Hunter Museum of American Art and the UTC Medical Center.

September 17: Lesson Field Test
Joel Baxley field tested an Advanced Placement lesson on Sung Dynasty Painting, Taoism, and Neo-Confucianism at Signal Mountain Middle High School in Chattanooga, TN.

September 18: Professional Development Planning Meeting
Laurie Melnik and Joel Baxley met with the leadership team at Barger Academy of Fine and Performing Arts in Chattanooga to discuss future professional development possibilities.

September 19: Southeast Organization of Kodaly Educators
Susanne Burgess attended a workshop on Folk Dancing in the Classroom Setting in Chattanooga, TN.

September 29: Allied Arts Grant Panel
Kim Wheetley served on the Learning in the Arts Grant Panel for Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga.


OCTOBER 2009

October 2-3: Arts Education Partnership Forum
Kim Wheetley and Laurie Melnik attended the Charting a Course for the Arts and 21st Century Learning Forum in Cambridge, MA.

October 3: Orff-Schulwerk Appalachian Chapter
Susanne Burgess participated in a board meeting of the Orff-Schulwerk Appalachian Chapter.

October 5: Medical School Workshop
Laurie Melnik, Joel Baxley, and Adera Causey facilitated a visual art and theatre lesson at the Hunter Museum of American Art for third-year residences in UTC's College of Medicine.

October 10: Professional Development Planning Meeting
Laurie Melnik, Joel Baxley, and Susanne Burgess met with the leadership team at Barger Academy of Fine and Performing Arts in Chattanooga to discuss future professional development possibilities.

October 26: Theatre Education Meeting
Laurie Melnik and Kim Wheetley met with theatre education majors in UTC's Department of Theatre and Speech to discuss revamping the theatre education certification program.

October 30 - November 1: International Conference of the Greek Society for Music Education
Susanne Burgess presented An Integrated Approach to Music and Reading: Building Expressive Readers and Singers workshop at the International Conference of the Greek Society for Music Education in Athens. She also visited schools where interdisciplinary instruction is taking place.


NOVEMBER 2009

November 6 & 24: Hunter Museum and UTC Medical Center
Laurie Melnik served on the Arts and Medicine Curriculum Planning committee for a collaborative program with the Hunter Museum of American Art and the UTC Medical School.

November 9-11 and 16-18: Music Residency
Susanne Burgess conducted a music, math, and reading residency with kindergarten classes at Battle Academy for Teaching and Learning in Chattanooga, TN.

November 10: Professional Development Planning Meeting
Laurie Melnik, Joel Baxley, and Susanne Burgess met with the leadership team at Barger Academy of Fine and Performing Arts in Chattanooga to discuss future professional development possibilities.

November 12: SCEA Strategic Planning

Laurie Melnik and Kim Wheetley attended an Imgination Education for Everyone Conferenceat National-Louis University in Chicago and Laurie presented a workshop From Theatre Games To Writing.

November 17-18: Arts Integration Workshop in Texarkana, AR/TX
Joel Baxley and Laurie Melnik conducted a workshop for the Texarkana Regional Arts & Humanities Council's ArtsSmart Institute for Learning.

Susanne Burgess and Kim Wheetley met with the Director of Maury County Schools and the Principal of Mt. Pleasant Middle School of the Visual and Performing Arts in Mt. Pleasant, TN to discuss a proposal for long-range professional development in arts integration.
