Modern Dance

This class exposes students to Cunningham, Graham and Limon techniques, three of the major techniques of Modern Dance – as a way to experience contrasting movement concepts and styles, aesthetics and creative processes. Dance vocabulary is taught with an understanding of the physical mechanics and sources for this dance language. Emphasis is on individual exploration of movement as a way to understand one’s physical, social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual dimensions.

Students expand their movement vocabulary and learn skills for planning and improvising specific movement choices when performing. This team-taught course introduced the processes and pedagogy of arts integration in the elementary school to education majors at UTC. It provided students with basic knowledge of dance, music, thatre, and visual art; reasons for integration; integration principles applicable across the curriculum; and opportunities to develop, observe, and participate in arts integrated instruction in elementary classrooms.
