Barger Academy of Fine Arts

The Southeast Center for Education in the Arts has enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with the teachers, administrators, and students of Barger Academy of Fine Arts, a K-5 magnet school in Hamilton County. SCEA has presented numerous professional development workshops for the Barger faculty and has served as guest artists-in-residence for many classrooms at the school.

In spring 2008, SCEA Directors partnered with Barger's First and Second Grade teachers to create and implement lessons in arts integration. This partnership served as an in-depth mentoring experience for the teachers, while allowing SCEA Directors to field test new lesson ideas and expand earlier units.

SCEA Director of Visual Art Education Joel Baxley worked with First Grade teachers to develop and implement a social studies lesson, Diversity in Africa: Exploring Homes, a study of architectural features as indicators of cultural diversity.

Director of Dance Education Marissa Nesbit worked on a variety of lessons with the Second Grade, including two science units, A Balancing Act: Pushing and Pulling Forces and Spinning through Space: Exploring Earth's Motion Around the Sun, and a language arts unit, Moving Meanings, Describing Dances.

Barger drama teacher Amy Burton joined the SCEA Directors as a presenter at the 2008 Arts Integration Summer Workshop in Chattanooga.
