At the workshop, you will join Susanne Burgess and Mary LaBianca (music and dance educators from the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts) and Beth Prigge (manager of studio and outreach programs for the Hunter Museum) exploring the child’s natural ability to learn through movement and music. You will examine how and why dance and music activities may further the social, linguistic, cognitive and creative abilities of children in the early childhood years. Modeled teaching strategies, which employ active rather than passive approaches to early childhood education through dance and music, will:
|
|
|
• introduce elements of dance and music to build teachers’ knowledge and skills
• demonstrate literacy instruction through creative movement and music-making
• employ active listening as a fundamental strategy for dancing and singing, as well as ..strengthening overall cognitive and literacy skills
• illustrate thematic and conceptual connections with music, dance, and The Creative Curriculum
• learn about somatic perspectives and systems of movement
• discuss inquiry and constructivist approaches to guiding the child in the classroom
The workshop format includes active participation, analysis and deconstruction of the pedagogy, and guided planning for adapting, designing, and implementing these strategies in your own classroom.
All participants will receive a certificate for TN State Licensing Hour credits. You may also receive continuing education credit from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for an additional fee of $10 per workshop. (You can pay the UTC fee onsite at the workshop.)
