External: Guest speakers (sportscaster, coaches, trainers, sports journalists, marketing personnel,
former/retired players, etc.)
Desired Outcomes/Competencies:
1. Students will set realistic career goals.
2. Students will become familiar with career opportunities and skills necessary to be successful.
3. Students will enhance research and writing skills.
Description of the Process: Students will pretend that they are professional athletes and have suffered a career ending injury and therefore must choose a new career in sports but not as a participant/player. In a notebook, students will create a career portfolio containing at least three career opportunities representing three or more of the career clusters:
Arts/Communication
Business/Marketing
Health Care
Hospitality/Tourism
Human Services
Manufacturing/Construction/Transportation
Science/Technology
1. Research what careers are available to you.
2. What sports careers interest you? What are the skill requirements for these jobs?
3. Choose three of the six clusters.
4. Produce a written report describing their findings.
The portfolio will contain:
- Pictures and other graphics
- Charts
- Articles
- Job qualifications
- Requirements ( education, experience, time/travel, etc.)
- Salary expectations
