Name of Activity:    “Who Works At the Zoo”

Time Frame:             45 minutes for two days

Links with Other Subjects:  Social Studies, Reading, Art

Resources/Materials:
Internal: Computer, Appropriate plug-ins real player, if not available use magazine pictures
External:   Director from local zoo visits classroom (Dardi Long- Warner Park Zoo) or visit a zoo.

Desired Outcomes/Competencies:
1. Students can identify 3 to 5 different jobs required to run a zoo.
2. Students can describe the responsibilities of these jobs.

Description of the Process:

  •  Explore the websites ( Memphis, Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga zoo web pages).
  •  Create a list of zoo employment.
  •  Choose a job you would enjoy.
  •  Complete a job application-skills needed.
  •  Create a journal with pictures “ A Day in the Life”
  •  Class is divided into small groups.  Group is given an animal to determine which employees are necessary for its existence.
  •  Summary of job positions needed in a zoo:  (Zoo Rangers, Docent/Zoo Interpreters, Breeding Specialist, Veterinarian, Custodial, Activities Director-Reception/Entertainment, Landscaping/Horticulture, Production/Artwork/Craftsmen, Public Relations Officer, Clerical/Office Assistance)
