Name of Activity: “Hand ‘n Glove”
Time Frame: one day a week/ six weeks
Links with other Subject Areas: Math, Science, Reading, Language Arts
Resources/Materials:
Internal: Assorted gloves and tools associated with various occupations
External: Landscaping, doctor, baseball coach, housewife, chef, hairdresser, fire fighter
Desired Outcomes/Competencies:
1. Students will realize the value of our community helpers and learn what their jobs entails.
Description of the Process:
- Place props in a large box.
- Have students one at a time come up and reach into the bag. They will put on the glove or hold up the tool. The class will have to identify who the community helper is that uses this glove/tool.
- Dramatic Play-Use props and signs to turn housekeeping area into a different business every few days or Plan a “career day”-Children dress up like community helpers. ( Role-play).
- Invite community helpers every Friday over a 6-week time span.
- Centers: Display books of community helpers
- Field Trip-Visit; Fire Department, Grocery Store, City Hall
