Narrative: The school counselor, Hope Turner, for Drummonds and Munford Elementary schools established a committee of teachers to determine the kinds of activities students (K-5) would enjoy as part of a Career Awareness month. Teachers created and selected activities around the theme "Which Hat Will You Wear" that would be enjoyed by the children while increasing their awareness of careers in the world around them. At the end of the month, weeklong culminating activities provided students with opportunities to share what they learned and allowed the community a chance to participate. Included in this weeklong celebration of careers were the following activities:
Art Galleries: children could display the art they created around a career they were studying. Live "wax" museum: students dressed the part of a career. When a spotlight appeared they were "live", giving a summary of that career. Once they were finished, they "froze" in place while each of the other "statues" spoke. "Careers on Wheel": community representatives brought vehicles necessary for the careers they represented (highway patrol, tree trimmers, etc.) It Works! As a result of this activity, teachers have asked to expand the program to include a full career day with representatives of the community "taking over the gym" one day.
