Narrative: In 1995, Vision Services in the Knox County Schools recognized a need to provide a summer enrichment program for visually impaired students in the county. With over 160 visually impaired students in the county many of these students and their parents are spread across many schools and never have an opportunity to interact with each other and share common ideas, challenges and victories. The two-week summer enrichment program provided such an opportunity for these students. The purpose of the program was to provide student with opportunities to socialize, life skills and career development activities. Field trips provide opportunities for students to interact with employees with visual disabilities and learn how they have been successful in their particular jobs.
It Works! Field trips to the Huntsville Space Center and Dollywood provide opportunities for students to interact with employees with similar visual impairments and learn how they have been successful in their particular jobs. For many of the students, overnight trips are the first time they have had an opportunity to learn independent living skills. Younger students are invited to portions of the summer program to interact with the older students and learn some of their success stories.
