Narrative: "Where Will I Ever Use This?" is a sourcebook, curriculum guide and video created by Professor Robert Forrester and Michael Highers of Volunteer State Community College. Eight industries participated through video discussions and the sharing of workplace math problems. Workshops were conducted with high school math teachers in Sumner, Smith, Macon and Trousdale Counties. Business representatives worked with forty-six (46) teachers on how to integrate math problems and discussion contained in the sourcebook with classroom activities. A website was also established for the purpose of share guidance and "real" world math problems. A brochure of the project is currently being distributed.
The project helps demonstrate where and how math skills are applicable in the work place. Its purpose is to be instrumental in supplying students to the workforce who are able to integrate themselves into skilled and technical jobs for the millennium.
It Works! The integration of the information with high schools was accomplished through the workshops and the high school math teacher's willingness to integrate the information with existing curriculum. Assuming each mathematics teacher instructs four math classes a day with approximately thirty (30) students, an estimated 5,520 students will experience the introduction of applied mathematics in the workplace. The North Central partnership is currently planning a summer institute for teachers and industry.
